Stars trounce Langston

OCU remains unbeaten within conference play

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University turned away Langston 25-11, 25-15, 25-17 on Thursday night at Abe Lemons Arena.
Ella Lofton provided OCU with a team-best 13 kills. The Stars, ranked 15th in NAIA volleyball, went to 6-1, 6-0 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
Lofton, a senior from Cedar Park, Texas, scooped up eight digs. Catelyn Vargas, a sophomore from Lubbock, Texas, totaled nine kills and three blocks, while Sophia Salak, a junior from McKinney, Texas, numbered 39 assists and four digs for Oklahoma City.
OCU's Kenady Bertling, a junior from Baytown, Texas, collected seven kills, five digs and a career-best three aces, and Hanna Nicholson, a senior from Choctaw, Okla., knocked down a career-high seven kills.
Isabel Harwell, a junior from Edmond, Okla., racked up 11 digs, and Caitlin Briggs, a senior from Mustang, Okla., turned in eight digs. Hannah Grundy, a freshman from Oklahoma City, served up three aces.
In the first set, the Stars reeled off a 7-0 run to build a 14-5 advantage. Grundy sparked the onslaught with a kill and an ace with Lofton smacking a pair of kills.
In the second, OCU broke a 3-3 tie with six unanswered points. Nicholson nailed two kills, while Vargas contributed a kill and a solo block.
In the third set, Oklahoma City overcame a 5-1 deficit. The Stars went up 9-7 with five consecutive points with Nicholson supplying two kills. Grundy sparked another 6-0 run with a kill and an ace.
The Stars meet USAO at 7 p.m. Monday at Abe Lemons Arena on senior night.
