USAO clips Stars 71-69

Coleman cans go-ahead 3-pointer with three seconds left

CHICKASHA, Okla. – Oklahoma City University's rally fell short as USAO came away with a 71-69 win Thursday night at USAO Fieldhouse.
Rashaun Coleman nailed a 3-pointer to give OCU the lead with 3.2 seconds remaining, but USAO's Stephon Hall answered with a 3 as time expired to hand the Drovers, ranked eighth in NAIA men's basketball, the victory.
Kealon Clayborne dished to Coleman in the corner, where Coleman sank a trey to provide the Stars a 69-68 edge. Tre'veon Ellis threw in the quick inbound pass, which Hall took, dribbled upcourt and fired in the winning 3-pointer off balance from the wing from about 25 feet.
OCU (1-4, 1-4 Sooner Athletic Conference) has had its last four games come down to the final possession. The Stars' three contests prior to Thursday were decided by one point each.
"Our guys are fighting their tails off, but sometimes this game isn't fair," OCU coach Tim Kisner said. "We have to be better taking care of the ball and making our free throws, but I'm proud of our guys and the way they keep fighting."
Facing a 65-52 deficit with 4:29 left, Oklahoma City mustered a 10-0 run. Coleman sparked the flurry with a pair of free throws and a trey. Clayborne's foul shots sliced the USAO lead to 65-62 with 2:40 remaining.
Clayborne scored on a transition layup to cut USAO's edge to 67-66 with 20 seconds to go. Cameron Hines hit a free throw to push the Drovers' lead to 68-66 with 15 seconds showing.
Ryan Birt connected on a pair of free-throw tries to reduce OCU's hole to 30-28 at the 2:37 mark of the first half. USAO increased its advantage to 43-31 on Ellis' bucket early in the second period.
Coleman, a senior from Houston, racked up 19 points and five assists. Coleman shot 6-for-10 from the field and 4-for-6 from 3-point range. Clayborne, a senior from Cedar Hill, Texas, produced 18 points, four assists and two steals. Clayborne and Coleman each scored season highs.
Kori Guest, a junior from Tulsa, Okla., turned in 11 points and five rebounds. Elie Ghomsi equaled his season best by pulling down nine rebounds. OCU held USAO to its season-low field-goal percentage (36.1 percent).
The Stars take on Mid-America Christian at 2 p.m. Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.
