Stars fend off Texas Wesleyan

OCU takes season opener for third consecutive season

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University rallied past Texas Wesleyan 13-25, 25-22, 25-19, 25-12 on Monday night at Abe Lemons Arena.
Sophia Salak, a junior from McKinney, Texas, piled up 55 assists to spearhead the Stars. Oklahoma City, ranked 16th in NAIA volleyball, went to 1-0, 1-0 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
OCU competed to the volleyball court for the first time since Dec. 6, 2019 in the NAIA Championships in Sioux City, Iowa – a wait spanning 443 days. The Stars have topped Texas Wesleyan the past three years in the SAC Tournament title match.
"That win was amazing on so many levels," OCU coach Kristen Coventon said. "Of course we want to get that first win, but to go out there and play as hard as we did when we were playing for the first time in over a year, I'm so proud of how they stepped up. We are so incredibly thankful to be back on the court."
Salak posted her sixth career 50-assist performance. Kenady Bertling, a junior from Baytown, Texas, boasted of a career-best 18 kills, while Ella Lofton, a senior from Cedar Park, Texas, equaled her career high with 18 kills for the Stars. Lofton, who picked up eight digs, matched the 18 kills she rang up against Northwestern (Iowa) on Dec. 6, 2019.
OCU's Isabel Harwell, a junior from Edmond, Okla., scooped up 28 digs and served up two aces to notch her fourth career 25-dig tally. Catelyn Vargas, a sophomore from Lubbock, Texas, knocked down nine kills, and Caitlin Briggs, a senior from Mustang, Okla., tracked down 10 digs.
Hannah Grundy, a freshman from Oklahoma City, added seven kills and seven digs, while Olivia Nutter, a junior from Plano, Texas, supplied the Stars with five kills and four blocks.
In the second set, Lofton nailed a kill to break OCU away from a 21-21 tie. Bertling smacked a kill to bring up set point, then had another kill to put away the frame.
In the third, Lofton pounded a kill, then teamed with Nutter on a block to help OCU take a 20-16 edge.
In the decisive fourth set, Lofton crushed four kills to spark the Stars to a 14-2 advantage.
The Stars are set to meet Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) at 7 p.m. Thursday in Waxahachie, Texas.
