OCU vs. John Brown men's basketball preview

THE MATCHUP

• Oklahoma City University returns to Abe Lemons Arena to face John Brown (Ark.) in Sooner Athletic Conference action on Wednesday night. The Stars are 2-0 on the home court this season with wins over Champion Christian (Ark.) and Langston
• OCU holds a 38-20 advantage in the all-time series against JBU. The Golden Eagles have won four of the last five match-ups between the two teams. Prior to that stretch the Stars won eight straight games in the series.
• Tickets cost $7 for adults and $5 for students. Tickets can be purchased via OCU's HomeTown Ticketing portal
• OCU students, faculty and staff gain admission to all OCU regular-season home athletics events free of charge with their ID

ABOUT THE STARS

• Oklahoma City (4-6, 3-1 SAC) returns to the home court after losing its first conference game of the season on Saturday, a 65-62 road decision to Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas)
• OCU made nine 3-pointers in the loss, marking the fourth time this season that the Stars have made nine or more treys in a game. The Stars attempted a season-low one free throw attempt in the loss
Romario Spence, a senior forward from Luton, England, recorded his third double-double of the season in the loss to SAGU, finishing with 10 points and 10 rebounds
• Rashaun Coleman, a senior guard from Houston, contributed a team-high 13 points in the loss. He has scored in double-figures seven times this season and has contributed 20-plus points four times. Coleman ranks 13th in the SAC with a 15.1 points per game scoring average
• Only two opponents have made 30 percent or better of their 3-point attempts against the Stars this season. Those two were McPherson (Kan.) at 30.3% and Montana Tech at 36%. Overall OCU leads the SAC and ranks sixth in the NAIA in 3-point field goal defense (57 of 229, 24.9%)
• OCU also ranks third in the SAC in overall field goal percentage defense (274 of 679, 40.4%)
• The Stars took the eighth spot in the preseason SAC Preseason Coaches' Poll. OCU owns 13 SAC regular-season championships and 10 SAC Tournament titles. Oklahoma City has advanced to the NAIA Division I Championship Tournament 25 times all-time and has won six national championships in 1991, 1992, 1994, 1996, 2007 and 2008

ABOUT THE GOLDEN EAGLES

• John Brown (7-4, 2-2) brings a two-game losing streak into Wednesday's game with OCU. Southwestern Assemblies of God defeated JBU 79-74 last Thursday and North Texas Dallas defeated the Golden Eagles 65-64 on Saturday. 
• Graduate student forward Densier Carnes leads JBU and ranks ninth in the Sooner Athletic Conference in scoring with a 16.8 points per game average. He also leads the squad and ranks 10th in the SAC in rebounding with a 6.9 rebounds per game average.
• Carnes contributed 11 points and 12 rebounds in the loss to UNTD. Junior guard DJ Ellis finished with a team-high 14 points against the Trailblazers.
• JBU ranks first in the SAC and fifth in the NAIA team rankings in 3-pointers made per game (11.5) and first in the conference and 65th in the nation in 3-point field goal percentage (138 of 380, 36.3%).  
• John Brown was picked to finish fifth in the SAC Preseason Coaches' Poll. 

ABOUT THE COACHES

Mark Berokoff (first season with OCU, 4-6)
• Mark Berokoff guided Randall to three national championships and a national runner-up finish in nine years as head coach of the Saints. Berokoff's record with Randall was 147-122. Randall regularly challenged SAC squads and defeated OCU twice during that time
• Berokoff coached five national player of the year honorees, 16 all-Americans, three national tournament outstanding player award winners and one scholar all-American with Randall. Berkoff was two-time national coach of the year
• Berokoff's coaching career includes experience on the high school, college and professional levels. His combined head-coaching record over 19 years in the college and prep ranks is 372-199
 
Jason Beschta (eighth season at JBU, 126-90) 
• Led the Golden Eagles to a school-record 28-5 record for the 2019-20 season. JBU was ranked no. 9 in the NAIA rankings entering the 2020 NAIA National Tournament, which was cancelled due to the COVID pandemic. .
• Guided JBU to its first-ever 20-win season and first-ever NAIA Tournament appearance during the 2018-19 season.  
• Prior to his arrival at JBU, Beschta led Oklahoma Wesleyan for three seasons, amassing a 62-36 record a OKWU. He led the Eagles to a round of 16 finish in the NAIA Division II national tournament in 2012-13, finishing that season 25-10
