Southwestern Assemblies of God Edges OCU In Sooner Athletic Conference Play

WAXAHACHIE, Texas – Southwestern Assemblies of God edged Oklahoma City University 65-62 in Sooner Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon at Sheaffer Center on the SAGU campus. The result snapped OCU's three-game winning streak.

SAGU (8-1, 5-0 SAC) held a slim 33-32 lead over OCU (4-6, 3-1) at halftime. The Lion lead would expand to 56-47 on a 3-pointer by Kaleb Hughley at the 7:19 mark of the second half before the Stars went on a 10-0 run to take a 57-56 lead on a lay-up by sophomore Jordan Keys at the 3:33 mark.

The teams would exchange the lead over the next two-plus minutes with OCU going ahead 62-61 on a lay-up by senior guard Ryan Birt at the :48 mark. SAGU would seal the win by making four of four free throw attempts in the last 30 seconds of regulation while senior guard Rashaun Coleman missed a jumper for the Stars between those sets of free throw attempts.

Coleman finished with a team-high 13 points and Birt contributed 12 points. Senior forward Romario Spence and junior forward Dadrian Hoambrecker contributed 10 points apiece with Spence also finishing with a team-high four assists and 10 rebounds.

OCU returns to action on Monday night with a road exhibition contest against former Sooner Athletic Conference foe Lubbock Christian. The teams last met in 2013, and OCU holds a 34-12 edge in the all-time series against the Chaps.

Lubbock Christian is currently a member of the NCAA Division II Lone Star Conference. LCU (7-0) is ranked first in the nation in the latest NABC Coaches' Division II top-25 poll. The Chaps have recorded three top-25 wins this season; over Colorado School of Mines, West Texas A&M and Hawaii-Hilo.

Head coach Todd Duncan, in his 11th season of leading LCU, has compiled a 182-107 career record. He led the Chaps to the South Central Regional Championship last season, their deepest run ever in the NCAA Division II Tournament.
