DALLAS – Senior forward
Romario Spence sank two free throws with 23 seconds remaining in overtime to lead Oklahoma City University to a 71-70 Sooner Athletic Conference win over North Texas Dallas on Thursday night at the Oak Cliff Fellowship Court in South Dallas.
OCU (4-5, 3-0 SAC) made 7 of its first 14 shots to build a 20-6 lead at the 11:16 mark of the first half. UNTD (3-6, 0-4) responded by going on a 27-8 run to claim a 33-28 halftime lead. The Trailblazers would lead by as many as nine points early in the second half before OCU fought back to tie the score 50-50 on a dunk by sophomore guard
Jordan Keys at the 10:19 mark.
The game was tight from that point forward with a couple of lead changes and three ties until senior guard
Rashaun Coleman provided OCU a 66-63 lead with a step-back jumper from the top of the key with 40 seconds remaining in regulation. UNTD's Christian Plummer tied the core at 66-66 with a 3-pointer from several feet behind the arc with 27 seconds left in the game. Coleman missed a jumper for the Stars with six seconds remaining, sending the game to overtime.
UNTD made only one of eight field goal attempts in overtime while OCU made one of three attempts, that being a lay-up by Spence at the 4:50 mark to provide the Stars a 68-66 lead. Donovan Deal made two free throws at the :40 mark to push the Trailblazers to a 70-69 lead but Spence would give the lead back to the Stars with his two free throws 17 seconds later. Deal missed a 3-pointer for UNTD with seven seconds remaining and Keys grabbed the defensive rebound for the Stars to secure the hard-fought win.
Coleman led OCU's offensive charge with a season-high 27 points. Spence contributed 15 points and seven rebounds and junior forward
Kori Guest finished with 11 points. Keys contributed a team-high eight rebounds.
OCU returns to action on Saturday afternoon with a conference road game at Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas). That game is scheduled for a 3:45 p.m. tip-off.
