FORT WORTH, Texas – Oklahoma City University posted a 33-9 romp past Texas Wesleyan on Thursday night at Timber Creek High School.
Cooper Mahaffey supplied Oklahoma City with a pin at 125 pounds. The Stars, ranked 11th in NAIA men's wrestling, went to 1-1 on the season, racking up their first dual win under head coach Justin Ensign.
OCU racked up four bonus-point victories. Mahaffey, a sophomore from Yukon, Okla., sparked the Stars with a fall against Daniel Govea in 2:40.
"As a team, I thought we came together and battled," Ensign said. "We're missing some key guys, and we did a great job of picking each other up."
Connor Holman, Keegan Luton and Drake Vannoy gave Oklahoma City major-decision victories. At 149, Luton, a freshman from Mustang, Okla., rolled to a 14-5 win over Brady Earhart. Luton improved to 6-1 this season.
Holman, ranked No. 7 nationally at 157 pounds, routed Gavin Holland 15-6. Holman, a senior from Choctaw, Okla., notched his first win of the season. At 174, Vannoy, rated 16th among the NAIA's 165-pounders, blanked William Simpson 9-0. Vannoy, a sophomore from Jenks, Okla., increased his season record to 6-3.
OCU's Chase Vincent prevailed 9-5 over Don Doyle at 184. Vincent, ranked sixth at 184, nabbed the win against the 18th-ranked individual at 174 pounds.
Jack Kitchingham, a freshman from Mustang, Okla., nipped Zane Miller in the first sudden-victory period 5-3 in the 285-pound contest to cap the OCU win.
The Stars return to the mat in the Lindenwood Open at 9 a.m. Nov. 20 in St. Charles, Mo.
