McPHERSON, Kan. – Oklahoma City University fell short to McPherson (Kan.) 83-80 on Saturday night at the McPherson Sport Center.
Ben Pyle hit the winning 3-pointer for McPherson. Oklahoma City (0-2) rallied from a 13-point deficit to tie the game in the final 10 seconds.
OCU's Jordan Keys collected a steal and sank a breakaway lay-in to create an 80-80 deadlock with nine seconds to go. Pyle answered with the decisive trey with two seconds left.
"I am proud of the team's effort," OCU coach Mark Berokoff said. "We battled all night. They just had a kid hit a very tough shot to beat us."
Rashaun Coleman turned a four-point play by firing in a 3-pointer and a free throw to cut McPherson's lead to 80-78 with 40 seconds showing. Pyle and Travon Gibson knocked down back-to-back 3s to cap an 11-0 run that put McPherson ahead 75-67 with 2:35 remaining.
The Stars built a 13-point cushion early in the second half. Romario Spence stuck a putback to give OCU a 50-37 advantage with 17:05 on the clock.
In the first period, Oklahoma City owned a nine-point lead. Spence nailed a pair of foul shots to provide the Stars a 37-28 cushion and finish off an 8-0 spree at the 2:02 mark of the first half. OCU used a 16-0 run capped by Eric Amandio's layup to build a 27-21 edge with 7:26 remaining. Keys tallied five points during the splurge.
Josh Rivers hit a 3 to put McPherson up 16-3 with 14:16 to go in the first.
Coleman, a senior from Houston, spearheaded Oklahoma City with 22 points and a career-high five treys. Spence, a senior from Luton, England, recorded career bests of 20 points, 12 rebounds and two blocked shots.
Keys, a junior from Justin, Texas, delivered 11 points and five rebounds, and Ryan Birt, a senior from Plano, Texas, put together 11 points, seven rebounds and three assists for OCU.
The Stars face Wiley (Texas) at 7:30 p.m. Monday in Marshall, Texas.
