OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University scooped up the 25-16, 25-10, 20-25, 25-14 victory over John Brown (Ark.) on Tuesday night at Abe Lemons Arena.
Olivia Nutter tied the Oklahoma City record for a match with 10 blocks. The Stars improved to 12-6, 11-3 in Sooner Athletic Conference volleyball.
Nutter, a senior from Plano, Texas, equaled the OCU mark set by Adrienne Tillery with 10 blocks against Lubbock Christian (Texas) on Nov. 10, 2007 in the SAC Tournament championship in Plainview, Texas. Tillery compiled her total in a five-set match.
Nutter established the program record for a four-set match. In four-set contests, Tori Leisure posted nine blocks Oct. 30, 2015 at Texas Wesleyan, and Manon Soraru did the same Nov. 29, 2016 against Bellevue (Neb.) in the NAIA Championships. The Stars notched 16 team blocks to fall one block shy of the team record of 17 blocks at Wayland Baptist (Texas) on Nov. 9, 2007 in the conference tournament. OCU matched the program mark for a four-set contest of 16 previously set Sept. 23, 2011 at Central Oklahoma.
Nutter added six kills Tuesday. Catelyn Vargas, a junior from Lubbock, Texas, produced 12 kills and two blocks, while Ruby Kelley, a freshman from Mustang, Okla., supplied the Stars with 11 kills and seven blocks.
OCU's Ella Lofton, a senior from Cedar Park, Texas, delivered 10 kills, 10 digs and four blocks for her eighth double-double this year, and Sophia Salak, a senior from McKinney, Texas, collected 42 assists, seven digs and three blocks.
Kenady Bertling, a senior from Baytown, Texas, put together seven kills and five blocks. Josie Thomas, a freshman from Choctaw, Okla., zeroed in on 14 digs and served up two aces, while Dylan Sokolosky, a freshman from Oklahoma City, contributed nine digs for the Stars.
Oklahoma City wrapped up a set of four home matches in five days. The Stars went 3-1 and hold second place by themselves in the SAC standings behind Texas Wesleyan (13-5, 10-2 SAC) and Wayland Baptist (17-5, 10-2 SAC).
In the first set, the Stars reeled off six points in a row for a 21-9 lead. Lofton knocked down a pair of kills to cap OCU's onslaught.
OCU built a 17-6 advantage with five consecutive points. Lofton nailed two kills and paired with Bertling for a block to spark the Stars' run.
In the third, Kelley and Nutter teamed on back-to-back blocks to put OCU ahead 20-9.
The Stars travel to Des Moines, Iowa for the Grand View Tournament this weekend. OCU meets Bellevue (Neb.), ranked eighth in the NAIA, at 4 p.m. Friday.
