Stars fall short to John Brown in overtime 88-82

OCU records season highs in free throws made, attempted

OKLAHOMA CITY – John Brown (Ark.) scraped past Oklahoma City University 88-82 in overtime Thursday night at Abe Lemons Arena.
Trae Bryant, a senior from Wilmington, N.C., propelled the Stars with 18 points and three assists. Oklahoma City went to 13-12, 6-10 in the Sooner Athletic Conference, while John Brown, ranked ninth in NAIA Division I men's basketball, improved to 22-3, 13-2 in the SAC.
Bryant nailed 15 of 16 free-throw shots to highlight a season-best 34-for-45 from the foul line for OCU. Anthony Davis, a senior from Lewisville, Texas, posted 16 points, nine rebounds and three steals with an 8-for-10 night from the free-throw line.
Eddie Smith, a freshman from Birmingham, Ala., tallied 11 points, while Rashaun Coleman and Darrion Willies each added 10 points. Willies, a senior from Fontana, Calif., hauled in five rebounds for the Stars.

Luke Harper of John Brown put together a 36-point effort for his second 30-point outing of the season. Harper had the highest individual scoring night by an OCU opponent this season.
Davis nailed three free throws to put the Stars ahead 61-56, which was OCU's largest lead of the night, at the 5:53 mark of the second half. John Brown responded with a 7-0 run to regain the lead. Rokas Grabliauskas hit a trey to give John Brown a 69-64 edge with 2:33 left.
Oklahoma City went 5-for-5 from the foul line in the final 1:49 of the game. Davis' 3-point play cut the Stars' deficit to 72-71 with 1:27 left, and Bryant hit a pair of foul shots to knot the score 73-73 with 26 seconds to go.
In the extra period, John Brown combined to hit 11 of 14 free throws and outscored OCU 15-9. John Brown held the lead for 37:06 of the game Thursday night. John Brown swept the regular-season series from the Stars, but needed overtime each time.
OCU visits Bacone for a 4 p.m. tipoff Saturday in Muskogee, Okla.
