Men’s Basketball Pulls Away Late at Bacone

Second Half Surge Helps Stars Grab Victory

MUSKOGEE, Okla. – The Oklahoma City University men's basketball team played their final non-conference game of the season on Saturday at Bacone College, and thanks to a trio of career high performances, the Stars pulled away late to take the win.

A.J. Cockrell, Kealon Clayborne, and Curtis Osceola each posted their highest scoring totals in an OCU uniform on Saturday, as the Stars (14-12) used a 50-34 second half scoring edge to pull away to the 98-82 win over Bacone (0-22).

OCU scored the first five points of the afternoon, but the Stars were unable to pull away and Bacone clawed their way back to take the lead at 11-10 with 13:45 to play in the opening half. The game remained close for the nest several moments, but with 9:23 to go, Bacone took the lead, and the Warriors held the advantage for much of the rest of the half. The Warriors lead grew to as many as six points, but in the waning moments of the opening frame, OCU put together an 8-2 spurt to tie the score at 41 on a layup from Clayborne with 2:46 to go. Seconds later, Clayborne reclaimed the lead for OCU with a 3-pointer but the teams traded baskets in the final seconds, and at the half, the score was knotted at 48.

Bacone held close early in the second half, but an 8-0 run for OCU gave the Stars the 67-59 lead with 13:40 to play. Bacone tried to whittle away at the deficit, but each time they did, the Stars answered, and several times in the half, the man leading the charge was Osceola. The junior guard from Anadarko, Okla. took full advantage of his opportunity, scoring 11 points all in the second half, as OCU pulled away to the 98-82 win.

Cockrell posted a season high 22 points in the win, and he added 11 rebounds for the double-double. Rashaun Coleman chipped in 20 markers, and Clayborne (18) and Osceola (11) each also added career best scoring totals. Trae Bryant dished out a team leading six assists, and Eddie Smith had three steals.

OCU made 43 of 64 (67.2%) shots from the field, but only five of 20 (25%) from beyond the arc. At the charity stripe, OCU was 7-for-14 (50%). The Stars scored the vast majority of their points inside the painted area, racking up a whopping 76 points in the paint.

OCU will face a tough test their next time out, when they hit the road to take on the NAIA No. 2 and Sooner Athletic Conference-leading Mid-America Christian University Evangels (24-1, 14-1 SAC). The game is slated to tip-off at 7:45 p.m.
