OCU Finishes Second as a Team, Castille Wins Individually by Two Strokes

Pari'Don Castille shot a final round 71 to earn his first individual collegiate win
LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. - The final round of the Ottawa University-Arizona Spring Invitational got underway at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning at the Wigwam Gold Golf Course with a shotgun start, and as the day began, both the Oklahoma City University men's golf team, and Stars' senior Peri'Don Castille stood in second place after 36 holes. While the Stars did improve their team score for the second straight round, OCU was unable to make a move up the leaderboard, but Castille was, as he rallied from one shot behind to take a two-shot individual victory.

Castille carded a 1-under par 71 in the final round on the 7,104-yard par-72 course to take a two-shot victory.

"It feels wonderful to get my first collegiate win," Castille said after the event. "It feels like my hard work is translating to the course and paying off. At the same time, if felt good to get back out on the course with my teammates. We're fighting to win another national championship, and that's still our ultimate goal as a team."

"We saw some good things as a team," head coach Andy Crabtree added. "We were still knocking off some rust out there, but Peri'Don winning is a big deal for him and for us, so it is nice to start the spring season off on a positive note."

Castille got to work early, as he notched three birdies in a four hole stretch from the first to the fourth holes.Despite a setback with a bogey on the ninth hole, he finished the front nine in 2-under par 34. After a bogey on the 13th, Castille bounced back immediately with consecutive birdies on 14 and 15, and he came home in 37 for a round total of 71, which tied for the second best individual score of the day.

Castille finished tied for the most birdies in the tournament with 14, and he took particular advantage of the par-5s, posting a 6-under par score on the longest holes in the event. He was joined in the top-10 on the final leaderboard by teammate David Meyers (fifth, 219) and Carson Seals (seventh, 224). Meyers shot a final round 72 with birdies on the first and the 18th holes, and Seals fired a 74 after starting 3-under in the first six holes.

OCU held on to second place, as the fifth-ranked Stars shot a 291 in the round for a tournament total of 884. The No. 4 OUAZ Spirit took the event title with a score of 860, and No. 15 Morningside College (Iowa) took third with a score of 925. OCU recorded 42 birdies as a team in the three rounds.

There were 11 teams in the event from 10 different NAIA Schools, including four who appeared in or received votes for the most recent NAIA coaches' top-25 poll.

OCU will be back in action on March 9-10 at the Oklahoma Wesleyan University Eagle Classic. The event will be hosted by Oklahoma Wesleyan at Hillcrest Country Club in Bartlesville, Okla.
