OCU cruises past Southwestern Christian 85-65

Stars grab season-high 12 steals

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University stomped Southwestern Christian 85-65 on Tuesday night at Abe Lemons Arena.
Trae Bryant, a senior from Wilmington, N.C., stuffed the stat sheet with 23 points, seven 3-pointers and four assists for the Stars. Oklahoma City went to 9-6, 3-4 in Sooner Athletic Conference men's basketball.
The Stars pocketed a season-high 12 steals as Southwestern Christian coughed up 17 turnovers. OCU scored 16 points off turnovers. OCU held Southwestern Christian to 37.7 percent shooting from the field to limit an opponent to a field-goal percentage less than 40 percent for the seventh time this season.
Oklahoma City dished out 18 assists to match its top total in conference play this season.
"I love seeing assist numbers go up," OCU coach Hank Aldous said. "That just means we're sharing the ball looking for our teammates. We don't care who scores. It's a team effort, and that's all that matters to us. Our guys' hands were active. Our effort did not lack on the defensive end tonight. We were ready. We were engaged. We knew the game plan, and our guys did a good job of executing it for 40 minutes tonight."
Bryant equaled his career highs for scoring, field goals (eight) and treys. Bryant fired in 8 of 14 shots from the field and 7 of 11 from 3-point territory. Bryant totaled 23 points and seven 3s against Bacone on Dec. 15, 2018 in Oklahoma City.
Rashaun Coleman supplied the Stars with 20 points, four rebounds, five assists and four steals. Coleman, a junior from Houston, posted season bests in points, baskets (nine) and steals.
"Those two guys are so talented," Aldous said of Bryant and Coleman. "They're both a little bit different. Trae has a little more finesse to his game. Rashaun is just a speedster, quick and athletic. They're really good guards playing off each other. Trae had it going tonight."
Kealon Clayborne, a junior from Cedar Park, Texas, turned in 14 points and four assists, both of which matched season highs. OCU's Anthony Davis, a senior from Lewisville, Texas, produced his fourth double-double of 13 points and 13 rebounds, while Darrion Willies, a senior from Fontana, Calif., chipped in 11 points, eight rebounds and four steals.
OCU scored the first 11 points of the second half. Coleman had two buckets to spark the Stars' 11-0 run and capped the surge with a transition lay-in which put OCU ahead 56-36 at the 16:46 mark.
Jack Foreman's fastbreak layup cut OCU's lead to 59-48 with 13:06 left. Clayborne pushed the Stars' advantage back to its largest margin 78-58 with a layup at 3:53 to go.
The Stars face Bacone at 7:45 p.m. Thursday at Abe Lemons Arena in Oklahoma City.
