OCU smacks Central Christian

Coventon earns milestone win

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University pounded Central Christian (Kan.) 25-9, 25-20, 25-8 on Friday night at Abe Lemons Arena.
Oklahoma City handed Kristen Coventon her 100th career head-coaching victory. The Stars, ranked 24th in NAIA volleyball, went to 14-1, 8-0 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
Coventon is in her first year as OCU coach. Conventon has a 100-85 career mark in her sixth year as a head coach.
The Stars' Marijana Bjelobrk, a senior from Belgrade, Serbia, notched nine kills, five digs, two aces and two blocks, and Catelyn Vargas, a redshirt freshman from Lubbock, Texas, rang up nine kills and three blocks.
Sophia Salak, a sophomore from McKinney, Texas, dished out 31 assists with two kills, while Lacy Beeler, a junior from Jenks, Okla., collected six kills, 11 digs and two blocks for OCU.
Isabel Harwell, a sophomore from Edmond, Okla., tallied 12 digs and three aces, and Caitlin Briggs, a junior from Mustang, Okla., picked up 10 digs and two aces. Cecilia Campos, a junior from Natal, Brazil, supplied the Stars with five kills.
Bjelobrk crushed a kill to put OCU on top 18-5 in the first set.
The Stars erased a 19-14 second-set deficit. OCU put together a 9-0 surge. Salak's tip for a kill gave the Stars a 20-19 edge. Vargas nailed a kill to move the Stars on top 23-19. Beeler and Vargas keyed the OCU run with two kills each and teamed with Salak on a block.
OCU's 12-0 run in the third set grew the Stars' lead to 18-3.
The Stars played the first of four consecutive home matches. OCU faces Panhandle State at 7 p.m. Oct. 4 at Abe Lemons Arena.
