OCU rallies past Texas Wesleyan 82-73

Stars overcome 12-point hole

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University prevailed over Texas Wesleyan 82-73 on Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.
Chris Williams, a senior from Denver, led OCU with 19 points. The Stars improved to 17-7, 12-6 in Sooner Athletic Conference men's basketball with their sixth consecutive victory.
Williams had 11 of his points in the second half as OCU rallied from a 12-point first-half deficit. Anthony Davis, a junior from Lewisville, Texas, produced 16 points, six rebounds, two blocked shots and two steals for the Stars.
Eric Wattree, a junior from Port Orchard, Wash., delivered 15 points, five rebounds and two steals while sinking 5 of 9 from 3-point range. Wattree matched his season best with five 3s, which he had against Ecclesia (Ark.) on Nov. 7.
Joe Clarke, a senior from New Rochelle, N.Y., turned in 10 points, four rebounds and two thefts, while Elijah Christman grabbed six rebounds. Mark Howell added six points, five rebounds, nine assists and two steals in a complete-game effort of 40 minutes.
Williams and Wattree canned treys as the Stars built a 10-0 lead to begin the game. Texas Wesleyan missed its first five shots from the field.
"That caps the seventh game in 14 days," OCU coach Vinay Patel said. "You could tell, the fatigue was there. We came out with a lot of energy. You couldn't ask for a better start. Texas Wesleyan has been battling like crazy. They led for most of the game once we went up 10-0. Both teams fought until the end."
Texas Wesleyan shot 50 percent from the field and hit 10 of 16 3-point shots for 62.5 percent from beyond the arc in the first period. OCU limited Texas Wesleyan to a 31.0 percent field-goal percentage and 3-of-12 shooting from past the 3-point line in the second half.
Peyton Sallee nailed a 3 to cap a 12-0 Texas Wesleyan surge and put the Rams on top 29-19 with 7:46 left in the first. Sallee hit 6 of 9 from 3-point land in the first half, but finished 7 of 11 from downtown.
The Stars reeled off an 11-0 run to move ahead 59-58 midway through the second half. Williams had six of those points, including the go-ahead free throw.

Joe Cook-Green hit a foul shot to tie the game, but Clarke and Davis nailed 3-pointers to put OCU on top for good.
Oklahoma City faces Panhandle State at 8 p.m. Thursday in Goodwell, Okla.
