Stars knock off Southwestern Assemblies of God 78-65

OCU owns five-game winning string

WAXAHACHIE, Texas – Oklahoma City University came away with a 78-65 win over Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) on Thursday night at the Sheaffer Center.
Chris Williams, a senior from Denver, sparked the Stars with 19 points and five rebounds. Oklahoma City went to 16-7, 11-6 in Sooner Athletic Conference men's basketball.
Williams downed all eight of his free throws to key a 16-for-17 effort from the foul line for OCU. Joe Clarke, a senior from New Rochelle, N.Y., led the Stars bench with 15 points and four rebounds.
Anthony Davis, a junior from Lewisville, Texas, compiled 12 points and six rebounds, and Eric Wattree, a junior from Port Orchard, Wash., chipped in nine points and two rebounds for the Stars.
"It was a great win on the road tonight," OCU coach Vinay Patel said. "I was proud of our defensive effort for the majority of the game. Our guys brought a lot of energy to the floor, and again we're limited in bodies due to injuries. We continue to get help from different people, and that speaks to our depth."
Mark Howell, a senior from Grand Prairie, Texas, contributed eight points, five rebounds, six assists and three steals to OCU's effort.
"Mark Howell played a very good game for us tonight and was on the floor for almost the entire game," Patel said. "We are asking a lot of him right now, and he continues to rise to the occasion. Joe Clarke added an extra spark to our team off the bench, and it was great to see him get going on offense."
Clarke's theft and bucket put OCU on top 21-13 at 11:04 left in the first period. Clarke followed Eric McCollum's putback and Elijah Christman's trey as the Stars put together a 7-0 run.
Williams hit free throws to give Oklahoma City its largest advantage of the night 64-45 with 11:31 remaining. Joshua Kashila's basket cut OCU's lead to 68-60 with 3:27 left, but Wattree responded with a 3 to put the margin back into double digits.

OCU takes on Texas Wesleyan at 3:45 p.m. Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.
