OCU stomps Southwestern Christian 104-86

Stars hold Southwestern Christian to 2-of-21 shooting from 3-point range

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University walloped Southwestern Christian 104-86 on Tuesday night at Abe Lemons Arena.
Chris Williams, a senior from Denver, piled up a career-high 41 points for OCU. The Stars improved their record to 15-7, 10-6 in Sooner Athletic Conference men's basketball.
Williams added 10 rebounds, six assists and three steals while picking up his first double-double of the season. Williams sank 11 of 22 field-goal attempts, 6 of 11 3-point shots and 13-for-15 from the free-throw line. Williams produced season highs on treys and free throws made while equaling the highest scoring total in the SAC this season.
"He had a really nice game," OCU coach Vinay Patel said. "He probably would have helped us more offensively in the first half if we hadn't moved him to the point. That interrupted his rhythm offensively. That's when Elijah (Christman) got hot. He did a nice job all around – hitting free throws, he mixed it up, he wasn't just shooting 3s."
Oklahoma City surpassed 100 points for the fifth time this season, for the second time in three games and third time during this stretch where the Stars have won seven of their previous eight contests. Southwestern Christian had dealt OCU a 105-70 setback Jan. 8 in Bethany, Okla. Southwestern Christian hit 15 of 28 for 53.6 percent from 3-point range to set season bests for an OCU opponent. Tuesday, OCU limited Southwestern Christian to 2-for-21 shooting from 3-point land and 38.7 percent shooting from the field overall.
"I felt really good about how we started," Patel said. "Our energy was great. They weren't happy with the outcome last time. They were geared up for this one. I didn't have to do much to get them excited to play tonight. That's what got our defense going."
Elijah Christman, a senior from Justin, Texas, posted 22 points and five rebounds while nailing 8 of 10 from the field and 6-for-6 from beyond the 3-point line, while Anthony Davis, a junior from Lewisville, Texas, chipped in 13 points, five rebounds and two steals for OCU. Christman has reached double figures in scoring seven of the past nine contests while shooting 75.7 percent from 3-point range.
The Stars shot 57.9 percent from the floor while hitting 62.5 percent (15-for-24) in the second half. OCU hit 17 of 28 3-point shots for 60.7 percent shooting from long distance. OCU sank 7 of 10 3-point tries in the second period.
"Offensively we had a really nice game," Patel said. "We did a nice job especially in the first half to get us going. We did a great job of sharing the basketball. That's what got us going. That's what got guys shots. Credit our guys to continue to find him and Elijah. These guys continue to fight and continue to find a way to win."
Williams and Eric McCollum combined for a 10-0 run to stretch OCU's lead to 51-28 with 3:40 left in the first half. McCollum had a pair of free throws and a putback, while Williams buried three free throws and a trey.
Williams downed another 3 to give Oklahoma City its biggest lead of the contest 54-29 with 3:10 to go before halftime.
The Stars take on Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) at 8 p.m. Thursday in Waxahachie, Texas.
