Stars remain alive for conference regular-season crown, top seed in posteason tournament

THE MATCHUP

• Oklahoma City University plays for the Sooner Athletic Conference regular-season championship and a shot at the No. 1 seed in the league tournament at Mid-America Christian
• Oklahoma City is tied with Wayland Baptist (Texas) atop the SAC standings. The teams would share the conference regular-season title if they finish tied in the standings. OCU would win the SAC regular-season crown outright with a victory and Wayland Baptist loss
• The Stars would take over the top seed for the SAC Tournament with a win and Wayland Baptist loss or would be the second seed if they finish tied with Wayland Baptist
 
ABOUT THE STARS
• OCU took a 65-53 win over USAO on Thursday at Abe Lemons Arena. The Stars (26-3, 19-2 SAC) have held 11 opponents in a row below 35 percent shooting from the field
Abby Selzer, a 6-foot-2 freshman from Thomas, Okla., topped OCU with 21 points and nine rebounds. Selzer sank 11 of 12 from the foul line for season bests in both free throws made and free-throw tries. Selzer turns in 16.8 points and 7.1 rebounds a game. Selzer leads the nation with a 63.7 percent field-goal percentage
Mallory Lockhart, a 5-7 freshman from Keller, Texas, posted 12 points as the Stars piled up 38 points off the bench. Lockhart knocked down 4 of 9 3-point shots, leaving her eighth on OCU's single-season list with 89 3-pointers. Lockhart provides the Stars with 11.7 points and 1.9 rebounds a game while hitting 45.9 percent from 3-point range and 96.8 percent from the free-throw line
• The Stars allow opponents to hit 28.9 percent from the field for the best defensive field-goal percentage in the NAIA. To see how the Stars rate among NAIA Division I statistically, click here
• OCU went to 10th in the last NAIA Division I rankings. Oklahoma City added to the NAIA's longest streak of top-25 appearances, making its 251st consecutive national ranking dating back to 1997-98. OCU has made 24 trips to the NAIA Division I Tournament and captured nine national championships in 1988, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2017
• The Stars picked up the second spot in the Sooner Athletic Conference preseason coaches poll. Oklahoma City took its 18th SAC regular-season championship and 12th SAC Tournament title last season. OCU has won or shared nine of the past 11 league titles, going 219-22 (.909 winning percentage) within SAC play since 2007-08
• Oklahoma City cruised to an 85-62 win over Mid-America Christian on Jan. 29 at Abe Lemons Arena. Selzer had 18 points and eight rebounds. OCU's record against Mid-America stands at 26-0
 
ABOUT THE EVANGELS
• Mid-America Christian picked up an 86-74 win over Southwestern Christian on Thursday in Bethany, Okla. The Evangels (20-7, 14-7 SAC) forged their third consecutive 20-win season and secured a home date for the SAC Tournament quarterfinals Tuesday
• Shaylan Coleman, a 5-8 senior, had 23 points, six rebounds and three assists. Coleman averages 14.2 points, 5.6 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 1.85 steals per game. She ranks third in the SAC in assists a contest
• Mid-America Christian's 82.7 points per game rank fourth in NAIA Division I
• MACU would take the third seed in the upcoming SAC Tournament with a win and a USAO loss. Mid-America would collect the No. 4 seed with a USAO win
• SAC coaches predicted Mid-America Christian to finish third in the SAC in the preseason

MEET THE COACHES
Bo Overton (108-20, fourth season with OCU)
• Led Stars to 28-6 season with the SAC regular-season and tournament crowns in 2017-18
• Overton has coached four all-Americans while at OCU, including Daniela Wallen, the 2017 NAIA Division I player of the year, and Daniela Galindo, the 2018 WBCA NAIA player of the year
• Overton served as an assistant coach for the Chinese national team in the 2012 Olympics
• From 1998-2004, he served as assistant for Oklahoma. During that time, the Sooners made five NCAA Tournament trips with the 2002 NCAA runner-up finish and Final Four berth with three Big 12 regular-season titles and two conference tournament crowns
• He has an overall record coaching college women of 130-67, notching his 100th career win in a 78-53 victory at Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) on Feb. 23, 2018
 
Hannah Moeller (67-31, third season with Mid-America Christian)
• Guided the Evangels to the 2018 National Christian College Athletic Association championship with its most victories (24) and SAC wins (13) ever
• Moeller took over as Mid-America Christian coach in 2016-17 after spending the previous four years as Randall head coach
• Moeller served as the MACU assistant women's basketball coach during the 2010-11 season for former OCU assistant coach and current University of Tulsa assistant coach Roman Owen
 

ABOUT THE SAC TOURNAMENT
• The SAC stages its postseason tournament starting Tuesday with quarterfinals on campus sites throughout the conference and continuing with semifinals and championship at Abe Lemons Arena on March 1-2
