Morningside halts Stars' streak

OCU's winning string draws to close at 33 consecutive wins

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Oklahoma City University's record long winning streak came to an end in a 17-25, 25-21, 25-18, 24-26, 15-11 setback to Morningside (Iowa) on Wednesday at the Tyson Events Center in the NAIA women's volleyball championships presented by Marriott South Sioux City Riverfront.
The Stars (34-2) moved their string to 33 consecutive victories Tuesday. Oklahoma City, ranked 16th, suffered its first loss since dropping a 25-21, 23-25, 25-23, 21-25, 15-9 decision to Evangel (Mo.) on Aug. 16 in Springfield, Mo.
OCU surpassed its previous program mark for longest winning string of 24 wins in a row from Sept. 9-Nov. 30, 2016. That Stars streak ended in the NAIA Championships.
Sophia Salak, a sophomore from McKinney, Texas, rang up 57 assists, seven digs, four kills and two aces for OCU. Salak turned in her third consecutive 50-assist performance.
The Stars' Isabel Harwell, a sophomore from Edmond, Okla., tallied 30 digs for her second outing with 30 digs and the 20th 30-dig performance in OCU annals. Harwell tied the single-contest mark for digs with 36 at Evangel. Harwell became the first Star to pick up 30 digs in NAIA Championships play.
Lacy Beeler, a junior from Jenks, Okla., produced 18 kills, 11 digs, four blocks and two aces for her 17th double-double this year. Ella Lofton, a junior from Cedar Park, Texas, delivered a career-high 16 kills.
Marijana Bjelobrk, a senior from Belgrade, Serbia, provided OCU with 14 kills, nine digs, three blocks and two aces, while Caitlin Briggs, a junior from Mustang, Okla., raked in 19 digs.
OCU took the fourth set as Lofton and Beeler hammered the decisive kills after Morningside tied the score 24-24. The Stars erased an 11-8 deficit in the fourth.
In the fifth set, Sabrina Creason served up an ace to put tournament host Morningside in front 8-4. Olivia Nutter nailed a kill to cut OCU's deficit to 11-9.
The Stars take on top-ranked defending national champion Park (Mo.) at 2 p.m. Thursday.
