Stars sail past Panhandle State

18th-ranked OCU moves SAC win streak to 26

GOODWELL, Okla. – Oklahoma City University wrapped up its regular season with a 25-14, 25-12, 25-20 win over Panhandle State on Saturday afternoon at Anchor D Arena.
The Stars finished the year unbeaten within the Sooner Athletic Conference. Oklahoma City, ranked 18th in NAIA volleyball, turned in a 30-1 mark with a 20-0 record in SAC play.
OCU went undefeated in conference play for the second time after going 18-0 in the SAC in 2016. OCU posted the 12th unbeaten SAC mark in league history. The Stars have 26 wins in a row in SAC play and a 29-match winning string overall.
The Stars notched their second 30-win season in a row. OCU rang up 30 wins for the third time in four years and fifth time in program history.
OCU enters the SAC Tournament as the top seed and winner of the past three league tournaments. The Stars secured their fourth SAC regular-season title in a row. The Stars face Panhandle State at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the SAC Tournament quarterfinals.
The tournament semifinals and championship will be at Abe Lemons Arena. The SAC Tournament semifinals will be 1 and 3 p.m. Friday with the title match noon Saturday.
Against Panhandle, Ella Lofton, a junior from Cedar Park, Texas, boasted of a team-high 13 kills to go with four digs and two solo blocks. Marijana Bjelobrk, a senior from Belgrade, Serbia, added 11 kills and five digs.
OCU's Sophia Salak, a sophomore from McKinney, Texas, notched 33 assists, 12 digs and two aces, while Isabel Harwell, a sophomore from Edmond, Okla., delivered 19 digs.
Lacy Beeler, a junior from Jenks, Okla., tallied eight kills, 10 digs, two aces and two blocks, and Caitlin Briggs, a junior from Mustang, Okla., contributed 11 digs and three aces for the Stars.
Lofton's block provided OCU with an 11-1 advantage in the first set.
Caitlin Vargas pounded a kill to put the Stars ahead 12-3 in the second set.
