OCU knocks Panhandle State from SAC Tournament

18th-ranked Stars square off with Southwestern Assemblies of God at 1 p.m. Friday

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University moved past the Sooner Athletic Conference volleyball tournament quarterfinals with a 25-16, 25-16, 25-22 win over Panhandle State on Tuesday night at Abe Lemons Arena.
Marijana Bjelobrk, a senior from Belgrade, Serbia, powered the Stars with 13 kills and 12 digs. Oklahoma City, ranked 18th in the NAIA, improved to 31-1 this season. OCU meets Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) at 1 p.m. Friday in the SAC Tournament semifinals.
The Stars extended their home winning streak to 34 matches in a row and their overall win string to 30. OCU matched its win total from last year in five fewer matches.
Bjelobrk posted her third double-double of the year. Ella Lofton, a junior from Cedar Park, Texas, nailed 12 kills to reach double figures in kills for the 12th time this year.
OCU's Lacy Beeler, a junior from Jenks, Okla., delivered 10 kills, 14 digs, three aces and three blocks for her 14th double-double of 2019, while Sophia Salak, a sophomore from McKinney, Texas, dished out 41 assists for her 12th 40-assist performance this season.  
Isabel Harwell, a sophomore from Edmond, Okla., tracked down 10 digs, and Caitlin Briggs, a junior from Mustang, Okla., notched seven digs for the Stars. Kenady Bertling topped OCU with four blocks.
Bjelobrk knocked down two kills as the Stars reeled off a 7-0 splurge to go out in front 21-13 in the first set. Bjelobrk recorded an ace to bring OCU to set point.
Oklahoma City created a 14-9 cushion with five unanswered points after Panhandle tied the second set 9-9. Beeler and Bertling twice teamed on blocks during that span.
In the third set, OCU erased an 8-2 deficit. The Stars rallied past Panhandle with a 5-0 run. Bjelobrk finished OCU's run with a kill for a 13-11 OCU edge. Beeler added a kill and combined with Bertling on a block.
Hannah Murray had eight kills, five digs and two blocks, while Keeley Johnston added 19 assists and six digs for Panhandle State (9-20). Richelle Carroll picked up 11 digs for the Aggies.
