Stars down Bethel 88-75

Davis scores 18 points in victory

FORT WORTH, Texas – Fifteen first-half points from Oklahoma City University's Eddie Smith led the Stars to an 88-75 victory Saturday in the Texas Wesleyan Champions Classic at the SId Richardson Center.
OCU, receiving votes in NAIA Division I men's basketball, moved to 5-1 on the season. Bethel (Kan.) dropped to 5-1 overall in the loss. Anthony Davis, a senior from Lewisville, Texas, powered the Stars with 18 points, three rebounds and two assists.
Four other Oklahoma City players joined Williams with double-digit scoring performances. Smith, a freshman from Birmingham, Ala., poured in 16 points on the night. Rashaun Coleman, a junior from Houston, also notched 16 points, Eric Wattree, a senior from Port Orchard, Wash., scored 12 and Kealon Clayborne, a junior from Cedar Hill, Texas, tallied 10.
After an early 9-9 tie, the Stars led for the final 17 minutes of the half. An 8-0 run, courtesy of 3-pointers from Smith and Wattree, increased OCU's lead to double-digits, 28-17, at the 7:30 mark. Smith nailed three 3-pointers for 15 total points, while Coleman, Davis and Wattree added six apiece to give the Stars a 41-34 lead at the break.
The Threshers outrebounded Oklahoma City 29-23. Coleman and Elie Ghomsi pulled down four each. OCU shot 58.9 percent from the field and 52.0 percent from 3-point range for the game, while the Threshers finished shooting 42.1 percent from the field and 30.0 percent from deep.
Bethel had four players score in double figures and were led by Garrett White with 23 points. Bethel turned it over 17 times versus OCU's 13 and connected on four less 3-pointers than the Stars, which keyed OCU's 13-point victory.
Oklahoma City plays next at 7 p.m. Tuesday against Randall in Moore, Okla.
