Our Lady of the Lake averts OCU comeback in OT verdict

Stars come back from 14 down in second half to force overtime

FORT WORTH, Texas – Eric Wattree's game-tying 3-point attempt missed as Our Lady of the Lake (Texas) edged Oklahoma City University 84-79 on Friday at Sid Richardson Center. The Stars' Eddie Smith took a 79-78 lead with a bucket at 59 seconds left in overtime, but a 3-pointer from OLLU's Christian Fields was the decider. OCU moved to 4-1 in men's basketball.
Wattree's 3-point try glanced off the rim as Tyler Giron secured the rebound for Our Lady of the Lake.
Smith regained the lead after Giron hit a shot after nearly two minutes of scoreless play to put the Saints on top 78-77. Fields missed a free throw, then hit the second free throw to put Our Lady of the Lake ahead 82-79. OCU called timeout with 16 seconds remaining in overtime, followed by an OLLU timeout. Wattree missed a 3-pointer with eight seconds on the clock. Giron hit two free throws to push Our Lady of the Lake's edge to 84-79 seconds later. The Stars trailed Our Lady of the Lake, 69-63, with 4:01 to go in regulation. A three-point play from A.J. Cockrell and trey by Smith tied the game, 71-71, at the 1:53 mark.
3-pointers from Wattree, Darrion Willies and Kealon Clayborne cut OCU's deficit to 45-44 at the 14:21 mark of the second half. Willies finished a fastbreak layup that brought OCU to its first tie of the half at 48-48 with 13:16 remaining.
Our Lady of the Lake sank 21 free throws in the game. The Saints went 10-of-17 in the first half, aiding them in creating a 34-25 advantage at the break.
OLLU created a 12-point lead in the first half but OCU kept them without a field goal in the final 2:55 of the period. Willies connected on a 3-pointer with 22 seconds left in the first to cut Our Lady of the Lake's lead to nine.
Cockrell, a senior from Tulsa, Okla., tied for a team-high 13 points for OCU. Smith, a freshman from Birmingham, Ala., also supplied the Stars with 13 points while grabbing six rebounds, and Rashaun Coleman, a junior from Houston, contributed 12 points, three assists and three steals.
OCU resumes action against Bethel (Kan.) at 1 p.m. Saturday at Sid Richardson Center.
