OCU prevails over Wayland Baptist

Stars continue lengthy win streak

PLAINVIEW, Texas – Oklahoma City University took a 25-23, 25-23, 25-17 victory over Wayland Baptist (Texas) on Friday night at the Hutcherson Center.
Lacy Beeler, a junior from Jenks, Okla., totaled 12 kills and eight digs to serve as the Stars' ringleader. OCU, ranked 18th in NAIA volleyball, moved to 29-1, 19-0 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
Catelyn Vargas, a redshirt freshman from Lubbock, Texas, pounded 10 kills, while Sophia Salak, a sophomore from McKinney, Texas, rang up 34 assists and five digs for the Stars.
Caitlin Briggs, a junior from Mustang, Okla., scooped up 14 digs, and Marijana Bjelobrk, a senior from Belgrade, Serbia, added five kills, six digs and four aces.
Isabel Harwell, a sophomore from Edmond, Okla., had 12 digs and three aces, while Kenady Bertling and Ella Lofton each contributed five kills.
OCU advanced its winning streak to 28 matches in a row and moved its winning string in league play to 25 consecutive victories.
The Stars seized the first set by overcoming a 23-20 deficit. Bjelobrk hammered a kill to spark the 5-0 run, while Harwell served up two aces to close out the set. OCU trailed 6-1 and 9-4. Michelle Krenowicz delivered a pair of aces to put the Stars in front 10-9.
Oklahoma City dug out of a 23-16 second-set hole. Bjelobrk keyed the 9-0 run with a couple of aces. Lofton produced a kill to tie the set 23-23.
Vargas crushed three kills to spur six unanswered points to put the Stars ahead 22-16 in the third set.
OCU takes on Panhandle State at 1 p.m. Saturday in Goodwell, Texas, to conclude the regular season.
