Stars set to face schools from Red River Athletic Conference

THE MATCHUPS
• Oklahoma City University travels to Waxahachie, Texas for the 2019 Southwestern Assemblies of God Classic
• The Stars face Texas A&M-Texarkana in OCU's first contest of the event
• OCU takes on LSU-Shreveport in the Stars' final game before coming home to host the Oklahoma City Classic Nov. 15-16
 
ABOUT THE STARS
• The Stars are coming off their final exhibition of the season, an 88-68 loss on Monday against Big 12 school Oklahoma. OCU faced off against three NCAA Division I programs during preseason play
• Mallory Lockhart, a 5-foot-8 sophomore, delivered 23 points while hitting 3-of-10 3-point attempts, posting an exhibition-best in scoring. Lockhart hit three 3-pointers in all three exhibition losses. She averaged 11.4 points and 2.1 rebounds per game while hitting 42.9 percent from 3-point territory in 2018-19, a top-10 mark in NAIA Division I. Lockhart collected third-team all-Sooner Athletic Conference honors
• Payton Taylor, a 6-0 junior from Ada, Okla., powered OCU with 18 points and five rebounds while shooting 7-for-13 from the field. Taylor scored a career-high 18 points during the 2018-19 season. She finished the year averaging 6.5 points and 3.1 rebounds per game while starting all 37 games played for Oklahoma City. Taylor received honorable mention all-SAC and academic all-SAC accolades
• Oklahoma City ranked first in field-goal percentage defense (30.3 percent), second in free-throw percentage (78.3 percent), third in blocks per game (5.79) and fifth in 3-point shooting (36.2 percent) in NAIA Division I in 2018-19. • Oklahoma City sits at third in the preseason NAIA Division I rankings. The Stars reached the NAIA Tournament for the 22nd consecutive year and for the 25th time overall last season. OCU has captured nine national championships in 1988, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2017
• OCU was chosen tied for first in the SAC preseason coaches' poll. The Stars took their 19th SAC regular-season championship last season
• OCU has never met Texas A&M-Texarkana. The Eagles will play their first season as a women's basketball program in 2019-20
• The Stars have a 3-1 all-time record against LSU-Shreveport. 10th-ranked OCU defeated No. 18 LSU-Shreveport, 71-50, on Nov. 10, 2018 in Waxahachie, Texas during last season's SAGU Classic. Taylor LaCour topped OCU with 23 points
 
ABOUT THE EAGLES
• 2019-20 marks the first season in Texas A&M-Texarkana women's basketball history
• Texas A&M-Texarkana improved to 1-1 after a 78-58 win over Champion Christian on Saturday in Texarkana, Texas. TAMUT held Champion Christian to 26.6 percent shooting from the field in the 20-point victory
• Heavunli Reese, a 5-6 freshman, registered 22 points and five rebounds in TAMUT's first-career victory over Champion Christian on Saturday. Reese finished 7-of-16 from the field and was 5-of-7 from the free-throw line. She also tied a team-high with three assists. Reese is averaging 14.5 points, 2.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game
• Victoria Hill, a 5-7 sophomore, scored 21 points and grabbed six rebounds to go with three assists against Champion Christian. Hill leads the Eagles in scoring with 17.5 points per game and ranks third on the team in rebounds with 5.0. She also amounts 2.0 assists per contest
• Texas A&M-Texarkana was picked to finish ninth in their first season as a part of the Red River Athletic Conference in the RRAC women's basketball preseason poll
• TAMUT ranks second in the NAIA in defensive rebounds per game (45.0) through their first two games played
 
ABOUT THE PILOTS
• Fu'tra Banks, a 5-9 junior, led the Pilots with 22 points and 10 rebounds in their 84-65 victory over Southern University at New Orleans in Shreveport, La. Banks hit 9 of her 14 field goal attempts in 28 minutes of playing time. Banks averaged 15.5 points and 6.7 rebounds per game during LSU-Shreveport's 2018-19 season. She received first team all-RRAC honors
• The Pilots finished fourth in the RRAC a year ago, losing to Our Lady of the Lake (Texas) in the conference tournament championship game. They led the RRAC in scoring defense (67.6) and field goal percentage defense (36.9 percent)
• LSU-Shreveport was picked to finish third behind Our Lady of the Lake and LSU-Alexandria in the RRAC preseason poll
 
MEET THE COACHES
Bo Overton (115-22, fifth season with OCU)
• Led Stars to a 33-5 season with the SAC regular-season crown and an NAIA DI tournament championship trip in 2018-19
• Overton has coached four all-Americans while at OCU, including Daniela Wallen, the 2017 NAIA DI player of the year, and Daniela Galindo, the 2018 WBCA NAIA player of the year
• Overton served as an assistant coach for the Chinese national team in the 2012 Olympic games
• From 1998-2004, Overton served as an assistant for Oklahoma. The Sooners made five NCAA Tournament appearances during that time, with a 2002 NCAA runner-up finish and Final Four berth. He also earned three Big 12 regular-season titles and two conference tournament championships throughout his six years
 
Kevin Dobbs (1-1, first season with Texas A&M-Texarkana)
• Dobbs enters his 12th season as a college women's head coach and fourth season as a head coach in the RRAC. He completed three seasons at the helm of University of the Southwest from 2011-14
• Dobbs coached at NCAA II Pfeiffer University (NC) for two seasons, Peru State (NE) for one season and Black Hills State (SD) for five seasons. He also has three years of assistant coaching experience at the NCAA II level
• He won DAC-10 Conference championships and qualified for two NAIA National tournaments while at Black Hills State. He coached two all-Americans and 17 all-conference players during his time
 
Matt Strickland (first season with LSU-Shreveport)
• Strickland just finished his first year as an assistant for the LSU-Shreveport men's basketball team after spending two seasons as the associate head coach for Montana Western
• Helped coach three all-Americans, five all-conference players and the NAIA National Player of the Year from the LSUS 2018-19 men's basketball team. The season ended in a Sweet 16 run in the national tournament
• Won the 2018 Frontier Conference Championship and made trips to the Elite Eight and Sweet 16 as associate head coach of Montana Western. He coached four NAIA all-Americans and five all-conference players
• Began coaching in 2014 as the women's assistant at Gillette College for two seasons. He helped the Lady Pronghorns to their first Region IX Championship and NJCAA DI women's national tournament appearance
