OCU clips Baker 66-58

Stars continue unbeaten start

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University knocked off Baker (Kan.) 66-58 on Tuesday night at Abe Lemons Arena.
Rashaun Coleman, a junior from Houston, topped the Stars with 14 points and five assists. Oklahoma City went to 4-0 in men's basketball on the season.
The Stars posted their best defensive marks of the season in various categories against Baker. OCU notched its lowest points allowed, most turnovers forced (19), most steals (five), lowest 3-point shooting clip allowed (23.1 percent) and fewest field goals permitted (19).
"We grinded out a win," OCU coach Stan Holt said. "It was a testament to our guys' will to continue to guard and hold a good team that put up 85 on us last year to hold them to 58 here. I just thought that was an incredible effort defensively. We played together on the defensive end for the most part. We can be pretty good on that end when we are all locked in and focused."
Coleman went 4-for-4 from the field and 5-for-7 from the free-throw line. Darrion Willies, a senior from Fontana, Calif., turned in 11 points and five rebounds, and A.J. Cockrell, a senior from Tulsa, Okla., supplied the Stars with 11 points and four rebounds. Willies hit all five of his free-throw attempts, while Cockrell sank 7 of his 10 free-throw tries.
Eric Wattree, a senior from Port Orchard, Wash., tallied nine points on 3-of-5 shooting from beyond the 3-point arc.
Coleman's jumper in the lane gave OCU a 21-9 advantage with 7:38 to go in the first half. Oklahoma City held Baker to 3-for-15 shooting from the field to that point. The Stars hit 50 percent from the floor and 5 of 9 3-point shots in the first period.
Curtis Osceola canned a jumper to provide the Stars their largest lead of the night 36-20 with 1:03 to go in the first half.
Baker sliced its deficit to 49-47 on Kobe Buffalomeat's free throw at the 6:16 mark of the second half. OCU responded with the game's next eight points as P.J. Grooms nailed a 3 to push the Stars' margin back into double digits.
The Stars take on Our Lady of the Lake (Texas) at 5 p.m. Friday in the Texas Wesleyan Champions Classic in Fort Worth, Texas.
