Stars ride out 79-69 win over Randall

OCU led by 22 in first half

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University got past Randall 79-69 on Tuesday night at Abe Lemons Arena.
Anthony Davis buried a 3-pointer for OCU after the Saints crawled back to within six points with 5:30 remaining. The Stars led by as many as 22 in the first half. Oklahoma City went to 7-3 in its final game of the calendar year.
Eddie Smith, a freshman from Birmingham, Ala., propelled the Stars with 16 points and four assists while sinking 5-of-7 field-goal tries and 4-of-5 3-point attempts. Davis, a senior from Lewisville, Texas, posted 14 points and 12 rebounds, shooting 5-of-9 from the floor and 3-of-3 from the free-throw line.
A.J. Cockrell, a senior from Tulsa, Okla., pitched in 12 points and 12 rebounds, shooting 4-of-7 from the field, and Kealon Clayborne, a junior from Cedar Hill, Texas, produced 11 points and two assists for OCU.
The Stars claimed 47 rebounds, their second-most on the season. OCU grabbed a season-high 37 defensive rebounds in the winning effort. In the second half, OCU hit 48.6 percent from the floor while holding Randall to 9-of-32 shooting, a 28.1 percent mark.
OCU led 45-29 at the break, enlarging their lead to 22 points at the 5:08 mark. Randall cut the Stars' lead to single digits with 6:27 to go in the second half but could only get to within six points.
"It was a tough game," OCU coach Stan Holt said. "I thought we had some really good stretches in the first half, opened up a lead. In the second half, you expect tough teams to make runs and Randall is tough and they are well coached. They made a couple of runs on us and we were able to withhold it. Changed a couple things defensively."
To start the first half, Oklahoma City went on a 10-0 run to jump out to a 16-5 start. Clayborne dropped in two 3s.
Cockrell hit a jumper in the paint to increase the Stars' lead to 39-17 with 5:08 remaining in the half, finalizing an OCU 21-3 run. Smith hit two 3s, while P.J. Grooms knocked in a pair from beyond the arc. Cockrell banked in a putback at the buzzer to give OCU a 45-29 halftime lead.
Rashaun Coleman iced the game with a late 3-pointer to increase OCU's lead to 13 with 42 seconds left to play. Coleman had six points in the second half, while Davis led the Stars with 10 points in the period.
"As long as we continue to share the ball and rebound as a team, which I hope we can continue the tone that we set tonight and that will be a major emphasis for us moving forward, I think we will continue to grow," Holt said. "We will continue to be a better team with each coming game. We want to play our best basketball down the stretch. It is a long season."
Oklahoma City takes to the road for an 11 a.m. exhibition contest Friday, Dec. 6 at NCAA Division II school West Texas A&M in Canyon, Texas.
