OCU slips up against West Texas A&M 94-62

Stars restart play on Jan. 2

CANYON, Texas – Oklahoma City University stumbled against NCAA Division II West Texas A&M 94-62 in an exhibition contest Friday at First United Bank Center.
Rashaun Coleman powered OCU scoring 13 points, grabbing two rebounds and dishing out three assists.
West Texas A&M improved to 9-0 with the victory.
OCU only had two players finish with double figures in the scoring column and were unable to slow down the high-powered West Texas A&M offense. P.J. Grooms tallied 12 points, while A.J. Cockrell and Elie Ghomsi each collected nine points. Grooms, a sophomore from Birmingham, Ala., added two assists and a steal. Cockrell, a senior from Tulsa, Okla., chipped in six boards. Ghomsi, a sophomore from Bafoussam, Cameroon, added 11 rebounds, two steals and two blocks.
The Stars were able to hold themselves with four points in the first six minutes of Friday's contest, until West Texas A&M's caught fire and ignited an 8-0 run to give the Buffs a 39-21 lead with 6:22 left in the first half. OCU had no answer for the Buffs, as West Texas A&M went on another run, this time 14-0, to extend their lead to 60-26 with 2:26 remaining in the period. Zach Toussaint connected on two 3-pointers during the spurt. The Stars trailed 65-29 after 20 minutes.
Oklahoma City won the second half but was only able to cut the Buffs lead down to 29 in the period. West Texas A&M outrebounded the Stars 40-31 and scored 34 points off 22 OCU turnovers on the afternoon.
OCU ended the contest shooting 42.9 percent from the floor and 30 percent from deep, while West Texas A&M shot 45.7 percent from the floor and 37.5 percent from downtown.
The game ended fairly even in two categories. The Stars connected on 14-of-23 from the free throw line while A&M finished 15-of-23. The Buffs outscored Oklahoma City 30-26 in the paint.
OCU returns to action at 7:45 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 2 against Langston in Langston, Okla.
