OCU falls short to Wayland Baptist 68-54

Stars limit third-ranked Wayland Baptist to well below its team average

OKLAHOMA CITY – Wayland Baptist (Texas) fended off Oklahoma City University 68-54 on Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.
Rashaun Coleman, a junior from Houston, posted 15 points and four assists to top the Stars. Oklahoma City fell to 6-3, 1-1 in the Sooner Athletic Conference, while Wayland Baptist, ranked third in NAIA men's basketball, went to 6-1, 2-0 in the SAC.
Kealon Clayborne, a junior from Cedar Hill, Texas, provided OCU with 12 points and four rebounds, while A.J. Cockrell, a senior from Tulsa, Okla., hauled in a team-high seven rebounds.
Coleman put the Stars ahead 22-18 with a jumper in the lane with 4:10 to go in the first half. Wayland Baptist answered with an 8-0 run to close the first period.
Clayborne totaled seven points as OCU unleashed a 9-1 surge to cut its deficit to 42-40 at the 11:35 mark.
The Stars held Wayland Baptist without a trey until the 11:11 mark of the second half. Wayland Baptist missed its first 14 3-point shots and made a season-low 2 of 17 attempts from beyond the arc.
OCU held the NAIA's top scorer, J.J. Culver, to 15 points. Culver entered the contest averaging 32.2 points a game. Wayland Baptist entered the game scoring 82.2 points per game.
"We had chances in the second half," OCU coach Stan Holt said. "We held a really good team to 68 points. We didn't score enough to match that."
Wayland Baptist used a 14-0 run to go up 63-45 with 4:01 remaining. Wayland Baptist outrebounded OCU 51-29.
"This team hasn't played its best basketball yet," Holt said. "We need our players to take personal responsibility for rebounding. We aren't going to see our best version of ourselves until we do."
The Stars meet Randall at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Abe Lemons Arena.
