Stars rout Panhandle State 73-41

OCU limits Panhandle to lowest field-goal percentage of season for an opponent

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University pounded Panhandle State 73-41 on Thursday night at Abe Lemons Arena.
Oklahoma City allowed its fewest points and lowest field-goal percentage of the season. The Stars went to 6-2, 1-0 in Sooner Athletic Conference men's basketball.
OCU limited Panhandle State to 27.5 percent shooting from the floor overall and 16.1 percent in the first half. The Stars permitted their lowest point total since a 72-28 victory over Southwestern Adventist (Texas) on Nov. 7, 2011 at Abe Lemons Arena. Southwestern Adventist scuffled to 23.8 percent shooting from the field against OCU back then. In conference play, OCU gave up its lowest point total since a 67-44 win over Oklahoma Christian on Jan. 8, 2011 at Abe Lemons Arena. Panhandle State committed 26 turnovers for the most turnovers an opponent has had against OCU in 2019-20.
"I thought our effort for the majority of the game was good," OCU coach Stan Holt said. "Overall, I felt like our players executed the game plan. I'm really, really proud to hold a team to 41. That's quite an accomplishment for us. This team needs to be great defensively if we're going to win games. We thought we needed to do a really good job of keeping them out of the paint."
Anthony Davis, a senior from Lewisville, Texas, totaled 18 points and two steals while shooting 6-for-10 from the floor for OCU. Rashaun Coleman, a junior from Houston, provided the Stars with 13 points, seven rebounds and four steals.
The Stars' P.J. Grooms, a sophomore from Birmingham, Ala., contributed 11 points and six rebounds, while Kealon Clayborne, a junior from Cedar Hill, Texas, chipped in 10 points, four rebounds and three assists.
Auston Chatman put Panhandle State ahead 9-8 with a 3-pointer, but Davis nailed a jumper in the paint to give OCU back the lead.
Grooms pushed the Stars' advantage into double digits for the first time on the night at 23-13 with a trey at the 5:32 mark of the first half.
OCU takes on Wayland Baptist (Texas), ranked No. 3 in NAIA Division I, at 3:45 p.m. Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.
