Stars pound Manhattan Christian 87-61

OCU wins eighth straight home opener

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University came away with an 87-61 victory over Manhattan Christian (Kan.) on Saturday afternoon at Abe Lemons Arena.
The win marks the largest margin of victory of the season for OCU, receiving votes in NAIA Division I. The Stars have now defeated Manhattan Christian at home for the third consecutive year.
A.J. Cockrell, a senior from Tulsa, Okla., collected 21 points to lead OCU in scoring. Cockrell also finished with four rebounds and a team-leading three blocks. He ended the game shooting 9-of-10 from the floor, increasing his field goal percentage to 93.3 percent through two games played.
Elie Ghomsi, a sophomore from Bafoussam, Cameroon, landed a double-double, grabbing 17 points and 14 rebounds on the day. Ghomsi came into the game averaging 3.5 points and 2.0 rebounds per game in the Stars' first two victories. Darrion Willies, a senior from Fontana, Calif., finished with 11 points and eight rebounds.
Eddie Smith, a freshman from Birmingham, Ala., also finished in double figures, claiming 11 points, three rebounds and two assists. Rashaun Coleman, a junior from Houston, received a game-high eight assists while also grabbing seven rebounds. Coleman now has a 18-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio on the season, leading the NAIA.
Every Star that entered the game finished with at least one assist during the afternoon. Coleman finished with eight, while Kealon Clayborne and Eric Wattree got three apiece. OCU assisted of 23 of their 35 baskets.
The 11 3-pointers mark the second-straight game OCU has made 10 or more from beyond the arc.  They made 10 in their double overtime win at Northern New Mexico on Oct. 26. The Stars won the rebound differential, 52-32. OCU finished the day 35-of-72 (48.6 percent) from the field and shot 51.4 percent in the first half. Both 11-0 run and a 9-0 run were put together by the Stars in the first half, as they led 47-26 at the break.
The Stars led by 20-plus points for the final 3:47 of the game. Their largest lead came when Kealon Clayborne nailed a 3-pointer with five seconds remaining to secure the 87-61 result.
OCU will host a 7 p.m. contest Tuesday versus Baker (Kan.) at Abe Lemons Arena.
