Stars roll past Southwestern Assemblies of God

18th-ranked OCU meets Texas Wesleyan at noon Saturday in SAC Tournament title match

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University advanced to the Sooner Athletic Conference volleyball tournament title match with a 25-13, 23-25, 25-15, 25-15 win over Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) on Friday afternoon at Abe Lemons Arena.
Oklahoma City (32-1) faces Texas Wesleyan at noon Saturday in the SAC Tournament championship at Abe Lemons Arena. The Stars, ranked 18th in the NAIA, reached the conference tournament title contest for the fifth consecutive year and seek their fourth SAC Tournament crown in a row.
Sophia Salak, a sophomore from McKinney, Texas, accumulated 45 assists, 10 digs and three blocks for the Stars. Salak piled up 45 assists for the sixth time and posted her 12th double-double this year.
OCU's Lacy Beeler, a junior from Jenks, Okla., produced 13 kills, 17 digs and four blocks for her 15th double-double for 2019, while Marijana Bjelobrk, a senior from Belgrade, Serbia, delivered 12 kills, eight digs and three blocks. Bjelobrk brought her career total to 1,420 kills, leaving her 11 kills shy of tying Xiaoting Ma's OCU career record.
Catelyn Vargas, a redshirt freshman from Lubbock, Texas, notched nine kills and a season-best eight blocks, and Ella Lofton, a junior from Cedar Park, Texas, contributed nine kills, six digs and two blocks for the Stars.
Caitlin Briggs, a junior from Mustang, Okla., collected 17 digs, and Isabel Harwell, a sophomore from Edmond, Okla., totaled 16 digs for OCU.
Southwestern Assemblies of God's leaders were Alexis Mealer (nine kills), Sophia Ivy (26 assists) and Nikki Almaguer (22 digs).
In the first set, Beeler and Vargas teamed on consecutive blocks to put Oklahoma City ahead 23-11.
Southwestern Assemblies of God overcame a 7-3 deficit to grab the second set.
Kenady Bertling had three kills during a third-set 5-0 run to give the Stars a 17-13 advantage. Lofton provided OCU with three kills in a row to fuel a set-clinching 8-0 surge.
OCU scored the final four points of the match as Bjelobrk served up an ace and Lofton and Vargas teamed on a block.
Oklahoma City and Texas Wesleyan snagged the SAC's bids in the NAIA Championships. The Stars scooped up a national-tournament berth with their fourth consecutive SAC regular-season championship. Texas Wesleyan raked in the conference's tournament bid. OCU squares off with Texas Wesleyan for the SAC Tournament title for the third year in a row.
