OCU collects SAC regular-season title with win at Central Christian

No. 22 Stars win fourth consecutive SAC regular-season crown

McPHERSON, Kan. – Oklahoma City University wrapped up its fourth Sooner Athletic Conference regular-season volleyball championship in a row with a 25-11, 25-11, 25-13 triumph over Central Christian (Kan.) on Friday night at Dr. Jerry E. Alexander Arena.
OCU clinched the outright league title with two regular-season matches left. The Stars, ranked 22nd in the NAIA, improved to 28-1, 18-0 in the SAC.
"I am so proud of what these girls have accomplished so far this season," OCU coach Kristen Coventon said. "These girls have been so adaptable with things that have been thrown their way this year, and I couldn't be happier with the result."
The Stars rolled to their 27th consecutive win and extended their winning streak in conference play to 24 matches in a row. OCU snatched up the No. 1 seed in the SAC Tournament.
The SAC Tournament happens Nov. 12-16 with quarterfinal matches to be held on campus sites Nov. 12. The tournament semifinals and championship take place at OCU's Abe Lemons Arena on Nov. 15-16. Oklahoma City has taken the last three SAC Tournament championships.
"We are excited to win the regular season, but we know we still have a lot of work to do with two games left, the conference tournament and then the national tournament," Coventon said. "We set goals for the team at the beginning of the season, and this is just the first of many that we get to check off."
Lacy Beeler, a junior from Jenks, Okla., spearheaded the Stars with 16 kills, five digs and three aces, and Marijana Bjelobrk, a senior from Belgrade, Serbia, delivered nine kills, 11 digs, four blocks and three aces.
Sophia Salak, a sophomore from McKinney, Texas, accounted for 31 assists, six digs and five aces, while Isabel Harwell, a sophomore from Edmond, Okla., collected 16 digs and two aces for OCU.
Ella Lofton, a junior from Cedar Park, Texas, contributed six kills, and Olivia Nutter, a sophomore from Plano, Texas, picked up five kills and three blocks for the Stars.
OCU squares off with Wayland Baptist (Texas) at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 8 in Plainview, Texas.
