Stars nab win over John Brown

24th-ranked OCU has dealt John Brown both its SAC losses this year

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University cooled off John Brown (Ark.) in a 25-10, 25-22, 17-25, 25-19 victory Wednesday at Abe Lemons Arena.
Marijana Bjelobrk, a senior from Belgrade, Serbia, fueled the Stars with 18 kills, nine digs and five blocks. OCU, ranked 24th in NAIA volleyball, improved to 17-1, 11-0 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
The Stars padded their winning streak to 16 wins in a row. Oklahoma City notched its 17th consecutive win in conference play and 30th win in a row at Abe Lemons Arena. OCU's last home loss came Oct. 21, 2017 against Our Lady of the Lake (Texas).
OCU halted John Brown's winning streak at 10. The Golden Eagles slipped to 16-4, 10-2 in the SAC.
"What an exciting environment to play in tonight," OCU coach Kristen Coventon said. "We knew it was going to be a tough and important match, so we asked our fellow athletes and OCU students to come out, and they did not disappoint. It's always great to win, but to win in that environment makes it that much better."
The Stars' Lacy Beeler delivered 10 kills, 16 digs and three blocks. Beeler, a junior from Jenks, Okla., provided OCU with her eighth double-double this year. Sophia Salak, a sophomore from McKinney, Texas, accumulated 41 assists, 11 digs and two blocks to give her seven double-doubles in 2019.
Ella Lofton, a junior from Cedar Park, Texas, recorded nine kills and two blocks, while Isabel Harwell, a sophomore from Edmond, Okla., eclipsed 20 digs for the sixth time this year with 24 for the Stars.
Caitlin Briggs, a junior from Mustang, Okla., totaled 11 digs, and Kenady Bertling, a sophomore from Baytown, Texas, pieced together six kills and four blocks for OCU. Catelyn Vargas, a redshirt freshman from Lubbock, Texas, chipped in four kills and a season-best six blocks.
OCU reeled off seven points in a row to build a 14-4 first-set advantage. Beeler contributed two kills and teamed with Vargas on a block in the 7-0 run.
In the second set, the Stars erased a 14-10 deficit. OCU's 6-1 run gave the Stars a 22-18 lead. Bjelobrk nailed a pair of kills and combined with Bertling for a block in that crucial stretch.
John Brown got out to a 19-10 lead on the way to the third-set win.
Bertling and Bjelobrk put up a block, then Bertling nailed a kill to cap a string of four consecutive points that grew OCU's fourth-set lead to 12-7. Bertling and Lofton teamed on a block to give the Stars a 15-9 margin.
"I thought we did a great job fighting back in that second set when they jumped out to a quick lead, and then coming back with a strong fourth set after dropping the third," Coventon said. "That win gives us some great momentum as we travel to Iowa tomorrow to play some great out-of-conference competition."
The Stars face their last non-conference opponents of the year in the Grand View Tournament on Friday and Saturday in Des Moines, Iowa. OCU takes on Lewis-Clark State (Idaho) at 2:30 p.m., then Cardinal Stritch (Wis.) at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
