OCU fends off Cardinal Stritch

24th-ranked Stars keep alive winning streak

DES MOINES, Iowa – Oklahoma City University came away with a 25-18, 25-23, 20-25, 25-16 win over Cardinal Stritch (Wis.) on Friday at Sisam Arena in the Grand View Tournament.
The Stars won 25-9, 25-19, 25-17 over Lewis-Clark State (Idaho) earlier Friday to go 2-0 on the day. OCU, ranked 24th in NAIA volleyball, padded its winning streak to 18, moving to 19-1 on the year.
Against Cardinal Stritch, Marijana Bjelobrk and Ella Lofton led OCU with 12 kills each. Bjelobrk, a senior from Belgrade, Serbia, added six digs and a season-high five aces. Kenady Bertling, a sophomore from Baytown, Texas, nailed 10 kills for the Stars.
Sophia Salak, a sophomore from McKinney, Texas, notched 46 assists, five digs, four kills and two aces, and Isabel Harwell, a sophomore from Edmond, Okla., picked up 23 digs for OCU. Salak reached 40 assists for the seventh time and 45 assists for the second time this season, while Harwell had her seventh 20-dig performance of the year.
The Stars' Lacy Beeler produced nine kills and 10 digs, while Catelyn Vargas crushed nine kills.
In the second set, OCU reeled off six consecutive points to erase a 20-17 deficit. Bjelobrk pounded three kills during the Stars' 6-0 run. Salak served up an ace to put OCU ahead 23-20.
Against Lewis-Clark State, Beeler put together 14 kills and 11 digs for her third consecutive double-double and ninth overall in 2019. Bjelobrk tallied 13 kills and six digs.
Salak handed out 33 assists, and Harwell delivered 11 digs and four aces. Caitlin Briggs, a junior from Mustang, Okla., added 10 digs.
The Stars rolled to 9-0 and 11-1 advantages in the first set. Bertling and Lofton teamed on a block to put OCU up 9-0, and Lofton crushed a kill to give the Stars an 11-1 advantage.
OCU faces Saint Francis (Ind.) at 9 a.m., then Huntington (Ind.) at 2 p.m. Saturday.
