OCU pastes Wayland Baptist

Stars increase winning streak to 15 matches

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University took a 25-12, 25-19, 25-20 victory over Wayland Baptist (Texas) on Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.
Marijana Bjelobrk, a senior from Belgrade, Serbia, tallied 12 kills and seven digs for the Stars. Oklahoma City, ranked 24th in NAIA volleyball, went to 16-1, 10-0 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
OCU won for the 15th consecutive match. During their current winning streak, the Stars have dropped only one set. The Stars have won their last 16 contests in league play dating back to a five-set loss to Southwestern Christian on Oct. 16, 2018 in Bethany, Okla.
"After this first round of conference play, I think we have done a really good job of working to get better in every position," OCU coach Kristen Coventon said. "We have been working to be able to score at each position, something I didn't think we started the season doing and it's been the key to our success. We need to continue to grow and work on our consistency and eliminate some of our errors. We will have a big game to start the second round of conference, and then we will be tested some more going to Iowa. We are excited for this next week and ready to see some teams outside our conference."
Ella Lofton, a junior from Cedar Park, Texas, put away 11 kills, while Lacy Beeler, a junior from Jenks, Okla., put together her seventh double-double of the year with 10 kills, 12 digs and four aces for OCU.
Sophia Salak, a sophomore from McKinney, Texas, amassed 38 assists, 14 digs and three aces for her sixth double-double of the season, and Isabel Harwell, a sophomore from Edmond, Okla., posted 11 digs and five assists for the Stars. Caitlin Briggs, a junior from Mustang, Okla., contributed 10 digs.
Beeler smacked a pair of kills and served a couple of aces during a 5-0 run that put OCU ahead 18-8 in the third set. Wayland Baptist cut its deficit to 24-20, but Olivia Nutter pounded a kill to end the match.
Oklahoma City meets John Brown (Ark.) at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Abe Lemons Arena.
