OCU reeled off a winning streak that lasted 24 matches from Sept. 9-Nov. 30, 2016. That string started with a 25-10, 27-25, 25-15 win over Graceland (Iowa) in the Baker Invitational in Baldwin City, Kan., and continued through to a 25-17, 25-11, 25-17 victory over Mobile (Ala.) in the NAIA Championships at Sioux City, Iowa. Midland (Neb.) halted the Stars' winning streak 16-25, 25-14, 25-22, 25-20 on Dec. 1, 2016 in the NAIA Championships.
Lacy Beeler, a junior from Jenks, Okla., and Marijana Bjelobrk, a senior from Belgrade, Serbia, led the charge for OCU with 10 kills and nine digs each. Ella Lofton, a junior from Cedar Park, Texas, also knocked down 10 kills.
Sophia Salak, a sophomore from McKinney, Texas, notched 37 assists, seven digs and three blocks, while Isabel Harwell, a sophomore from Edmond, Okla., nabbed 22 digs for the Stars.
OCU's Kenady Bertling, a sophomore from Baytown, Texas, contributed six kills, and Catelyn Vargas, a redshirt freshman from Lubbock, Texas, chipped in five kills and a team-high four blocks. Caitlin Briggs, a junior from Mustang, Okla., turned in nine digs and two aces.
Vargas teamed on three blocks and smashed a kill to help the Stars put together a 7-1 first-set lead.
In the second set, OCU jumped out to a 4-0 lead thanks to a pair of Bertling kills. Beeler nailed a couple of kills to break a 12-12 tie.
Hanna Nicholson pounded the kill to secure the victory for OCU in the third set. Oklahoma City has won its last 33 contests at home and 22 matches overall in conference play.
