Stars top Southwestern Assemblies of God

OCU ties best winning streak in program history with 24 consecutive victories

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University prevailed over Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) 25-18, 25-22, 25-14 on Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.
Oklahoma City won in a matchup of the top two teams in the Sooner Athletic Conference standings for the second day in a row. The Stars, ranked 22nd in NAIA volleyball, improved to 25-1, 15-0 in the SAC.
OCU holds a three-game lead over Texas Wesleyan in the league standings. The Stars defeated Texas Wesleyan on Friday night. Southwestern Assemblies of God opened Saturday tied with Texas Wesleyan for the second spot in the standings, but sat behind John Brown (Ark.) after Saturday's results.
The Stars matched the longest winning streak in program history while reaching 25 victories for the second year in a row. OCU collected its 24th consecutive win to equal the winning streak the Stars put together from Sept. 9, 2016 to Nov. 30, 2016. Oklahoma City has won each contest since suffering its only loss of the season in five sets to Evangel (Mo.) on Aug. 16 in Springfield, Mo. OCU notched its sixth 25-win season in program history.
Oklahoma City's Lacy Beeler notched her 12th double-double of the season. Beeler, a junior from Jenks, Okla., posted 13 kills, 11 digs, three blocks and two aces. Caitlin Briggs, a junior from Mustang, Okla., scooped up 15 digs with two aces to reach double digits in digs for the 14th time in 2019.
Sophia Salak, a sophomore from McKinney, Texas, produced 27 kills, 11 digs and four blocks for her ninth double-double this year, while Isabel Harwell, a sophomore from Edmond, Okla., notched 11 digs for the Stars.
Catelyn Vargas, a redshirt freshman from Lubbock, Texas, contributed six kills and four blocks, and Kenady Bertling, a sophomore from Baytown, Texas, added five kills and a team-best five blocks for OCU. Cecilia Campos, a junior from Natal, Brazil, tied Bertling with five blocks.
To close out the first set, OCU scored the last three points of the frame. Marijana Bjelobrk smacked two kills, then combined with Bertling and Campos for a block to secure the first set.
In the second set, the Stars pulled away from an 18-18 tie with four consecutive points. Salak sparked the run with a kill, while Briggs added an ace.
OCU reeled off an 8-0 splurge in the third set. Beeler and Salak teamed on blocks three times during the Stars run and combined with Bertling on a block to put OCU ahead 16-9.
The Stars face Langston at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Abe Lemons Arena.
