OCU rallies past Mid-America Christian

Stars get second five-set win this year

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University came from behind for a 23-25, 21-25, 25-8, 25-19, 15-7 victory over Mid-America Christian on Thursday night at the Gaulke Activity Center.
The Stars improved to 2-1 in five-set matches this season. OCU, ranked 24th in NAIA volleyball, went to 22-1, 12-0 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
Oklahoma City has taken its last 21 matches in a row. The Stars have won 18 consecutive matches in league play.
Lacy Beeler notched her second 20-kill performance of the year. Beeler, a junior from Jenks, Okla., delivered 20 kills, nine digs and three blocks for OCU. Marijana Bjelobrk, a senior from Belgrade, Serbia, supplied the Stars with her second double-double of the year with 14 kills, 19 digs and four blocks.
The Stars' Sophia Salak, a sophomore from McKinney, Texas, accumulated 45 assists, nine digs, two aces and two blocks, while Isabel Harwell, a sophomore from Edmond, Okla., raked in 24 digs and three aces for her eighth 20-dig performance of the year.
Caitlin Briggs, a junior from Mustang, Okla., scooped up 15 digs, and Cecilia Campos, a junior from Natal, Brazil, added seven kills and five digs for OCU. Kenady Bertling, a sophomore from Baytown, Texas, contributed four kills and seven blocks, while Olivia Nutter, a sophomore from Plano, Texas, chipped in three kills and four blocks.
The Stars posted 13 blocks to Mid-America Christian's two on the night.
In the fifth set, Oklahoma City pulled away from Mid-America and a 3-3 tie with a 4-0 run. Campos and Nutter knocked down a pair of kills each during that stretch. Beeler's kill gave the Stars match point, and Campos smacked the kill to put away the victory.
In the third set, OCU reeled off five points in a row to move ahead 18-5. Beeler and Bertling teamed on a block to cap the run. Bertling came up with a solo block to increase the Stars' lead to 21-7.
The Stars visit USAO at 7 p.m. Friday in Chickasha, Okla.
