OCU falls to Southwestern Assembles of God

Stars drop match for first time since Sept. 1

WAXAHACHIE, Texas – Oklahoma City University took a 25-22, 25-22, 17-25, 25-23 loss to Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) on Friday at the Sheaffer Center in a clash of volleyball teams with unbeaten Sooner Athletic Conference records.
Lacy Beeler, a sophomore from Jenks, Okla., posted career highs with 19 kills and 18 digs to go with three blocks for OCU. The Stars went to 8-2, 4-1 in the SAC.
OCU's winning streak came to a halt at four, while Southwestern Assembles of God (12-1, 5-0 SAC) upped its win string to 11.
Marijana Bjelobrk, a junior from Belgrade, Serbia, added 13 kills, 10 digs and six blocks, and Ella Lofton, a sophomore from Cedar Park, Texas, contributed 12 kills and six digs for the Stars.
Oklahoma City's Taylor Horton, a sophomore from Edmond, Okla., rang up 37 assists, 15 digs, four blocks, three kills and two aces, while Lauren Hermes, a junior from The Colony, Texas, tracked down 15 digs to go with six assists. Kenady Bertling, a freshman from Baytown, Texas, topped the Stars with six blocks.
Bjelobrk sparked OCU in the third set. Bjelobrk hammered back-to-back kills to give the Stars a 19-9 advantage.
The Stars led 17-13 in the fourth set. Southwestern Assemblies of God reeled off five consecutive points to go on top. Kali Shaw's kill helped the Lions hold off OCU to clinch the victory.
Oklahoma City faces Texas Wesleyan at 1 p.m. Saturday in Fort Worth, Texas.
