OCU snatches win over John Brown

Stars collect victory in first outing of season

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University prevailed over John Brown (Ark.) 25-21, 27-25, 15-25, 25-19 on Thursday night at Abe Lemons Arena.
The Stars handed Santiago Restrepo the win in their 2018 home debut. Oklahoma City went to 2-0, 1-0 in Sooner Athletic Conference volleyball.
Restrepo's first win as OCU head coach came by forfeit over Bacone. Restrepo moved his career coaching record to 370-261 in his 21st year. Restrepo spent the past 14 years as Oklahoma coach.
Marijana Bjelobrk, a junior from Belgrade, Serbia, posted 18 kills, nine digs and two blocks, while Taylor Horton, a sophomore from Edmond, Okla., accumulated 46 assists, 16 digs, five kills, two blocks and an ace for the Stars.
Lacy Beeler, a sophomore from Jenks, Okla., collected 15 kills and 12 digs, and Ella Lofton, a sophomore from Cedar Park, Texas, racked up 13 kills and four digs for OCU. Lauren Hermes, a junior from The Colony, Texas, picked up 14 digs and two aces, while Isabel Harwell, a freshman from Edmond, Okla., contributed 10 digs and an ace. Olivia Nutter, a freshman from Plano, Texas, topped the Stars with four blocks.
OCU wrapped up the win in the fourth set as the Stars surged to five consecutive points, taking a 19-13 advantage. Horton and Kenady Bertling combined for a block, then Bjelobrk and Nutter teamed on another to ignite OCU. Bjelobrk and Lofton followed with kills.
The Stars grabbed the second set 27-25 as Lofton pounded a kill, then Harwell served up her ace.
Oklahoma City took the first set propelled by a 6-0 run. The Stars erased a 13-11 deficit as Horton, Lofton and Nutter nailed kills. Horton's kill provided OCU with a 17-13 lead.
The Stars take on Clarke (Iowa) at 2 p.m., then Lindenwood-Belleville (Ill.) at 6 p.m. Friday in the Avila Classic in Kansas City, Mo.
