Ellis’ game-winner lifts OCU past Central Christian 75-73

Senior from Powder Springs, Ga., hits floater as time expires

MCPHERSON, Kan. –  Jonathan Ellis knocked down the game-winning shot in the lane to beat the buzzer and lift Oklahoma City University past Central Christian (Kan.) 75-73 Tuesday night at Dr. Jerry E. Alexander Arena.
Ellis, a senior from Powder Springs, Ga., gave the Stars the game-winning bucket after a pair of Central Christian free throws tied it at 73 with 19 seconds to go. OCU, ranked 12th in the latest NAIA Division I men's basketball rankings, improved to 19-6 overall and 12-5 in the Sooner Athletic Conference while Central Christian dropped to 13-12 on the season and 6-11 in league play.
Oklahoma City held a seven-point lead with just over five minutes to play, but the Tigers went on a 7-0 run to knot the game at 71 apiece with 2:45 to go. Samuel Williams buried a jumper that put the Stars ahead by two at the 1:28 mark, but Central Christian was sent to the line and hit both free throws with 19 seconds left.
OCU knocked down an efficient 51.5 percent of its shots in the first half and began to create some separation when Williams put the Stars up 31-23 with around five minutes remaining. Williams, a senior from Reno, Nev., finished with 16 points and 11 rebounds – his seventh double-double of the season.
Leading Oklahoma City in the scoring column was Ridell Camidge, who poured in 22 points, hit four 3-pointers and grabbed 12 rebounds. Terence Bonhomme, a senior from St. Martinville, La., also made four triples and had 15 points and three steals for the Stars.
A 3-pointer from Bonhomme put OCU up nine with 2:17 left in the first half, but the Tigers ended on 7-2 run to cut the deficit to four points at the break. The Stars had 30 of their 41 points in the paint in the first half.
OCU got up by seven points with 12:33 left in the game, then Central Christian fought its way back and tied the game with 10 minutes to go. The Stars built the lead to seven five minutes later and again the Tigers clawed their way back to tie the 71.
Central Christian entered Tuesday's contest ninth in NAIA Division I in total rebounds per game with 42.7, but were outrebounded by OCU 38-29. The Stars pulled down 14 offensive boards while the Tigers had just nine, and Oklahoma City turned its offensive rebounds into 11 second-chance points.
Oklahoma City returns to action at 7:45 p.m. Thursday against Southwestern Christian at Abe Lemons Arena.
