Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Stars fall to Wayland Baptist 80-78

OCU’s winning streak snaps at seven games

PLAINVIEW, Texas – Lou Dunbar's game-winning three fell short of the basket as the final buzzer sounded and Oklahoma City University saw its seven-game winning streak come to an end as the Stars dropped a nail-biter to No. 20 Wayland Baptist (Texas) 80-78 Saturday afternoon at the Hutcherson Center.
A pair of free throws from Jonathan Ellis tied the game at 78 apiece with 32 seconds left, but Wayland Baptist was fouled on the following possession and knocked down both shots from the charity stripe to take an 80-78 lead with three seconds left. The Stars advanced the ball and called a timeout, but were unable to get off a clean look as time expired.
OCU, ranked No. 15 in NAIA Division I men's basketball, dropped to 18-6 overall and 11-5 in the Sooner Athletic Conference. WBU improved to 17-7 on the year and 9-6 in SAC play. Samuel Williams, a senior from Reno, Nev., led the Stars with 21 points and 10 rebounds, notching his sixth double-double of the season.
Wayland Baptist jumped to an 8-0 lead within the game's first two and a half minutes. The Stars were able to cut the score down to 15-11, but the Pioneers answered with a 12-0 run and led by 16 with just over nine minutes left in the first half.
OCU wouldn't fold, as it continued to chip away at the Wayland Baptist lead. Ellis, a senior from Powder Springs, Ga., led the Stars on a 12-1 run and gave his team much-needed momentum. Ellis finished with nine of his 13 points in the first half and dished three assists.
A triple from Terence Bonhomme later cut the WBU lead to one with 1:10 left in the half. Dunbar then knocked down a buzzer-beating three to end the half and give Oklahoma City a 37-35 lead heading into the break.
Neither team was able to create separation for the majority of the second half, as the biggest lead of the half came when Ridell Camidge buried a trey to give the Stars 74-68 lead with 4:51 to go. Camidge, a senior from Wilmington, N.C., finished with 17 points, five rebounds and three steals.
The Pioneers tied the game at 76 with 2:25 remaining, then got the go-ahead basket with 1:25 left. Ellis missed a three on the next possession but Wayland Baptist turned the ball over and Ellis was fouled and sent to the line with 32 seconds left.
The Stars entered Saturday's contest shooting 38.5 percent from beyond the arc, but were held to just 29.2 percent against the Pioneers. OCU was outscored 38-24 in the paint and got just nine points from its bench while WBU had 17.
Oklahoma City returns to action at 7:45 p.m. Tuesday against Central Christian (Kan.) in McPherson, Kan.
