Stars upend Southwestern Assemblies of God

OCU stands alone in second place in conference standings

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University dealt Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) its first conference loss of the season 29-27, 25-15, 19-25, 25-11 on Saturday afternoon at Abe Lemons Arena.
The Stars took over second place outright in the Sooner Athletic Conference volleyball standings. Oklahoma City moved to 23-3, 14-2 in the SAC, while Southwestern Assembles of God, ranked 23rd in the NAIA, fell to 24-2, 15-1 in league play.
OCU stands a game behind Southwestern Assemblies of God and a game ahead of Texas Wesleyan in the league standings. The Stars took their first victory over a ranked opponent this season.
Lacy Beeler spearheaded OCU with 16 kills, 15 digs and three blocks. Beeler, a sophomore from Jenks, Okla., posted her 12th double-double of 2018 and fourth in a row.
Ella Lofton, a sophomore from Cedar Park, Texas, supplied the Stars with 12 kills and five digs to reach double digits in kills for the eighth time this year. Taylor Horton, a sophomore from Edmond, Okla., amassed 33 assists, 17 digs and nine kills, and Lauren Hermes, a junior from The Colony, Texas, rang up 21 digs, six assists and two aces.
OCU's Marijana Bjelobrk, a junior from Belgrade, Serbia, contributed eight kills, nine digs and three blocks, while Isabel Harwell, a freshman from Edmond, Okla., scooped up 16 digs.
Sophia Salak, a freshman from McKinney, Texas, provided the Stars with 13 assists and nine digs, and Olivia Nutter, a freshman from Plano, Texas, pitched in five kills and five blocks. Caitlin Bosarge, a junior from Mustang, Okla., chipped in eight digs.
The Stars clinched the victory by unleashing a 9-1 run. Nutter hammered three kills and teamed with Bjelobrk twice on blocks to spark Oklahoma City.
OCU began the fourth set on a 5-0 run. Bertling threw down a kill, then Lofton knocked down a pair of kills. Bosarge served up an ace. Bjelobrk and Nutter combined on a block to extend the Stars' advantage to 9-1.
Bjelobrk smashed a pair of kills to rally OCU from a 27-26 deficit in the first set. Kali Shaw's kill gave Southwestern Assemblies of God set point, but Beeler smacked a kill to extend the set.
Oklahoma City scored the last six points of the second set. Beeler crushed two kills, including the kill to clinch the set, while Nutter added a kill.
The Stars meet USAO at 7 p.m. Thursday in Chickasha, Okla.
