Stars knock off Saint Francis

OCU turns in fifth consecutive 20-win season

ST. LOUIS – Oklahoma City University reached 20 victories for the fifth consecutive year with a 25-17, 25-14, 25-20 win over Cumberland (Tenn.) on Saturday morning in the Eutectics Classic at the St. Louis College of Pharmacy Gymnasium.
OCU took a 16-25, 25-12, 25-11, 25-19 victory from Saint Francis (Ill.). The Stars moved to 21-2 this year.
The Stars have amassed 117 wins over the past five years, averaging 23.4 wins a season.
Against Cumberland, Marijana Bjelobrk spearheaded OCU with 14 kills, four digs and three blocks. Taylor Horton provided the Stars with 32 assists, four digs, two aces, two blocks and two kills.
Oklahoma City's Lauren Hermes collected 19 digs, while Lacy Beeler delivered eight kills and eight digs. Ella Lofton contributed seven kills and four blocks, and Olivia Nutter topped the Stars with five blocks. Isabel Harwell scooped up seven digs.
OCU improved its winning string to 13 with the win over Saint Francis. Saint Francis extended the match to four sets to become only the second foe to win a set against OCU during the win streak. The Stars had swept 11 consecutive matches in straight sets.
Beeler, a sophomore from Jenks, Okla., served as OCU's ringleader with 18 kills, 18 digs and three blocks. Bjelobrk, a junior from Belgrade, Serbia, totaled 16 kills, nine digs and two blocks.
Horton, a sophomore from Edmond, Okla., recorded her 10th 30-assist performance of the year with 35 assists and 16 digs, while Hermes, a junior from The Colony, Texas, turned in 19 digs and nine assists for the Stars.
Lofton, a sophomore from Cedar Park, Texas, picked up 12 kills and two digs, and Kenady Bertling led OCU with five blocks.
Bjelobrk delivered 3.92 kills a set, while Beeler produced 3.46 kills per set to top the Eutectics Classic. Hermes tracked down 5.69 digs per set, and Nutter, a freshman from Plano, Texas, averaged 1.38 blocks a set to lead the field in the event.
OCU returns to Sooner Athletic Conference play in a 7 p.m. contest Tuesday at Southwestern Christian in Bethany, Okla.
