Stars fall to Texas Wesleyan 106-92

OCU drops second consecutive game

FORT WORTH, Texas – Oklahoma City University fell to the defending NAIA Division I men's basketball champion Texas Wesleyan Rams 106-92 Saturday night at the Sid Richardson Center.
Terence Bonhomme supplied OCU with a team-high 20 points on 8 of 13 shooting, his fourth game of 20 or more points this season. The loss dropped Oklahoma City, ranked 14th in NAIA Division I, to 9-4 overall and 3-3 in the Sooner Athletic Conference. Texas Wesleyan jumped to 8-6 on the year and 3-3 in SAC play.
"Texas Wesleyan is a very good basketball team, they're tough, they score and they defend," OCU head coach Vinay Patel said. "And today we were the complete opposite of that, especially in the first half. We took quick shots, we didn't share the basketball and we didn't rebound the basketball. The second half we came back and I thought our effort was there."
The Stars had five players finish with double figures in the scoring column, but were unable to slow down the high-powered TWU offense. Ridell Camidge, a senior from Wilmington, N.C., added 15 points and six rebounds and Lou Dunbar, a senior from Seabrook, Texas, finished with 14 points and two boards. Samuel Williams and Walter Rickett each tallied 11 points.
Neither team was able to create much separation in the first seven minutes of Saturday's contest, until Texas Wesleyan's Branden Jenkins caught fire and ignited his team on a 10-0 run to give the Lions a 28-15 lead with 12:56 left in the first half. OCU had no answer for Jenkins, as the TWU standout had 31 of his 44 points in the game's first 20 minutes.
Oklahoma City trailed by as many as 17 points with three and a half minutes left in the first, but battled back thanks to a late 9-2 run highlighted by tough makes from Bonhomme and Dunbar. The Stars headed into the break shooting 44.1 percent from the floor and 28.6 percent from deep, while Texas Wesleyan shot 58.8 percent from the floor and 46.2 percent from downtown.
Camidge got an and-one layup cut the TWU lead to 10 and give OCU much-needed momentum to start the second half. The Lions responded with a 10-2 run to take a 73-55 lead with 12:22 to go, then notched their biggest lead of the game (20) via a one-hand slam from Jenkins.
The Stars made one final push when Dunbar drained a 3-pointer that sliced the Texas Wesleyan lead to 10 with eight and a half left to play, but the Lions once again had an answer – this time responding with a quick 9-3 run. Oklahoma City was unable to get the game within single digits, allowing the Rams to finish the game 57.4 percent from the floor and 40 percent from downtown.
Despite the loss, OCU led Texas Wesleyan in points in the paint (44-40), second chance points (24-14), fast break points (17-12) and bench points (23-14). The Stars also outrebounded their opponent 36-34, snagging 21 offensive boards.
OCU plays next at 5 p.m. on Jan. 13 against Southwestern Christian in Bethany, Okla.
