OCU takes forfeits from St. Gregory's

Stars face Southwestern Christian on Saturday in Bethany, Okla.

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University's men's and women's basketball games originally scheduled for Thursday at Abe Lemons Arena will not be played due to the closure of St. Gregory's.
The Stars will seek forfeits for their scheduled games against St. Gregory's this season. St. Gregory's closed at the conclusion of the fall 2017 semester.
Per NAIA rules, those schools with St. Gregory's on their 2017-18 schedules have the opportunity to either collect a forfeit or schedule another opponent in St. Gregory's place. St. Gregory's, founded in 1875, entered the conference in 1998-99.
The first recorded OCU men's basketball intercollegiate game came against St. Gregory's in 1922-23. OCU, led by coach E.B. Cottrell, won 50-13. The two schools did not meet each other again until Dec. 3, 1997, when Oklahoma City won 99-48 at Frederickson Fieldhouse. Aaron Howell topped OCU with 19 points.
Oklahoma City holds a 39-4 all-time record against St. Gregory's including the forfeit from Thursday's contest. The Stars clipped St. Gregory's 67-65 as Jonathan Ellis hit a running layup as time ran out Feb. 18 in Shawnee, Okla.
In women's basketball, OCU improved to 45-1 against St. Gregory's with the result of Thursday's game. In the most recent meeting, the Stars prevailed 113-44 on Feb. 18 in Shawnee, Okla., led by Daniela Wallen's 20 points and nine rebounds. OCU won 93-67 in the first meeting against St. Gregory's on Nov. 12, 1997 in Shawnee, Okla. Taiwo Rafiu spearheaded OCU with 21 points and seven rebounds.
Oklahoma City takes to the court next against Southwestern Christian on Saturday. The women's tilt tips off at 3 p.m., while the men's contest starts 5 p.m. Saturday in Bethany, Okla. The Stars were scheduled to play St. Gregory's on Feb. 17 in Shawnee, Okla.
