OCU topples Wayland Baptist 79-70

Stars knock off third ranked foe in 2017-18

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University prevailed 79-70 over Wayland Baptist (Texas) on Thursday night at Abe Lemons Arena in a battle of ranked NAIA Division I men's basketball teams.
Samuel Williams, a senior from Reno, Nev., served as the Stars' ringleader with 20 points and 12 rebounds. OCU, ranked 21st, improved to 12-5, 5-4 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
Oklahoma City went to 3-1 against top-25 competition this season. Wayland Baptist, ranked 11th, dropped to 13-4, 6-3 in the SAC, creating a three-way tie atop the conference between Texas Wesleyan, USAO and Wayland Baptist. OCU halted Wayland Baptist's four-game winning streak, which included two wins over ranked teams.
The Stars scored below 80 points for the third time this season. OCU entered the game with a league-leading 92 points-per-game average.
"We did a nice job of controlling the tempo," OCU coach Vinay Patel said. "They're a team of runs. They're high energy, high emotion. We did a nice job of staying under control, running our stuff and getting the shots we wanted. I was very proud of our team for that. That was a little different for us to play this year."
Oklahoma City took over the lead with a 9-0 run late in the first half. Ivan Saicic put the Stars ahead 28-22 with 4:34 remaining on a pair of lay-ins. At the end of the first period, Williams had a set of free throws and a jam to give OCU a double-digit lead at 35-25 with 1:03 left.
The Stars controlled the lead the whole second half, building a 16-point advantage four times. Elijah Christman scored on a layup to put OCU on top 68-52 with 5:39 to go.
"It's so hard to get a win in this conference," Patel said. "Any coach in this league will tell you that. Anybody in this league can beat anyone on any given night. I was glad we found a way to win a controlled-tempo game."
Williams provided OCU with his team-best fourth double-double of 2017-18 and a 10-for-10 night from the free-throw line. Saicic, a senior from Belgrade, Serbia, posted 14 points, six rebounds and six steals while shooting 6-for-9 from the field.
Lou Dunbar, a senior from Seabrook, Texas, pitched in 12 points and 3-for-5 shooting from beyond the arc, and Ridell Camidge, a senior from Wilmington, N.C., added 10 points and five rebounds for the Stars.
OCU remains at home against Panhandle State at 4:45 p.m. Saturday inside Abe Lemons Arena.
