Stars pull out win over Baker

OCU notches two victories Saturday

BELLEVUE, Neb. – Oklahoma City University topped Baker (Kan.) 25-12, 19-25, 25-19, 25-27, 16-14 on Saturday at the Lied Center in the Bellevue Labor Day Classic.
OCU went 2-0 on the day after a 25-19, 29-27, 25-21 victory over Tabor (Kan.). The Stars improved to 3-4 in volleyball.
Oklahoma City secured the victory over Baker by scoring the last three points of the contest. Marijana Bjelobrk hammered a pair of kills to rally OCU from a 14-13 deficit and have match point. Lacy Beeler nailed a kill to seal the win.
Sanja Vojnovic served up three aces to help OCU to a 7-1 fifth-set advantage. Stefani Nell added two kills.
In the third set, the Stars reeled off a 5-0 run to take a 23-10 lead. Bjelobrk and Jazmyn Boyd-Clark sparked OCU with kills. Bjelobrk pounded the kill to give the Stars the set.
With the win over Baker, Oklahoma City moved to 1-1 on the year in five-set matches. The Stars took fourth-ranked Midland (Neb.) to five sets Friday before succumbing 25-22, 20-25, 25-27, 25-10, 15-11.
Bjelobrk, a sophomore from Belgrade, Serbia, supplied OCU with 15 kills, and Nell, a senior from Tulsa, Okla., picked up 14 kills and 18 digs.
Vojnovic, a senior from Bajeljena, Bosnia, rang up 45 assists, five digs and five aces, while Dani Chase, a senior from Yukon, Okla., posted 27 digs. Clark, a junior from Troutdale, Ore., knocked down 10 kills.
Against Tabor, Bjelobrk produced 19 kills and seven digs, while Vojnovic accumulated 42 assists and two aces. Chase scooped up 29 digs, and Nell contributed 11 kills and seven digs.
Beeler, a freshman from Jenks, Okla., smacked nine kills, while Holly Randall, a senior from Edmond, Okla., had five kills and five blocks.
The Stars begin Sooner Athletic Conference play against Southwestern Christian at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Abe Lemons Arena.
