John Brown edges Stars

OCU takes first conference setback since Oct. 30, 2015

SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. – John Brown (Ark.) trimmed Oklahoma City University 25-27, 23-25, 25-17, 25-17, 15-13 on Friday night at Bill George Arena.
Stefani Nell, a senior from Tulsa, Okla., spearheaded the Stars with 21 kills and 19 digs. OCU went to 5-5, 2-1 in Sooner Athletic Conference volleyball.
Oklahoma City extended its winning streak in SAC play to 23 with its win over St. Gregory's on Sept. 7 in Shawnee, Okla. John Brown became the first team to beat the Stars in regular-season league play since Texas Wesleyan on Oct. 30, 2015 in Fort Worth, Texas. OCU enjoyed an 18-0 SAC record in 2016.
In the fifth set, the Stars rallied from a 10-5 deficit to tie the score 13-13. Lacy Beeler and Marijana Bjelobrk knocked down kills to cut John Brown's lead to 13-12. Carly McKinney and Bayli Reagan had kills to tip the match in John Brown's favor.
In the second set, Jazmyn Boyd-Clark and Lindsey Grace teamed on a block, then Bjelobrk crushed a kill to secure the frame for OCU. Bjelobrk and Clark combined on a block to wrap up the first set for the Stars.
Bjelobrk, a sophomore from Belgrade, Serbia, collected 18 kills and three blocks, and Sanja Vojnovic, a senior from Bajeljena, Bosnia, accumulated 50 assists, 13 digs and four kills for the Stars. Vojnovic posted the fourth 50-assist performance of her OCU career.
Dani Chase, a senior from Yukon, Okla., supplied Oklahoma City with 24 digs, while Lindsey Grace, a senior from Edmond, Okla., added six kills and 15 digs. Holly Randall, a senior from Edmond, Okla., chipped in eight kills and five blocks.
The Stars face Bacone at 1 p.m. Saturday in Muskogee, Okla.
